Dear Lovers of Deep Earth Rooted-ness, It’s that time of the year again: the chi is moving down, into winter, into dark earth. For some people, this darkness is depressing. Although I personally have a “sunny” disposition, the Tao has taught me to love this darkening. In my chi cultivation practice, I go with the direction of chi flow, and do both movement and meditation practices that focus on rooting, especially this time of the year. Tao is about listening to your body, and following the Way of Nature. Nature itself defines “grounded-ness”. We could say that Tao is the invisible or spiritual ground of physical Nature, traditionally called the Body of the Tao. The single most common challenge I find in people, whether they are on a spiritual path or not, is lack of grounding. Lack of grounding adversely affects both physical and spiritual health. This is especially critical at a time when the planet is quickening its vibration, an integral part of its global re-birthing process. I always schedule my Internal Chi Breathing and Bone Rooting workshop in December (this year Dec. 3-4, in Asheville). It is simply easier to teach it in late Fall/ early Winter, as I’m supported by the flow of the larger chi field rooting down into the earth. In this seminar, also available as homestudy, I devote one day to learning natural, reverse, and counter-force breathing. Breathing opens the “root” of the body, which is the lower dantian (lit.”elixir field”), a.k.a. the belly center. I’ve found that when you are grounded in your breathing, then your emotional and mental bodies quickly get more grounded. A strong “belly-root” creates a feeling of calmness and peace, even when things are chaotic around you. I developed a special qigong form, Ocean, Sky, & Great Heart Breathing, to speed up the rooting process. This shifts your breathing focus from gasping at outer air to breathing more internally, through chi channels in different layers of the body. This form, nicknamed “Blissful Breathing Qigong”, is the best “quick-energizer” qigong that I teach The second day at this workshop I spend working on opening up the bones in our body, using bone breathing, bone beating, bone compression, and bone spiralling. These are all part of the Iron Shirt method I learned from Mantak Chia, but adapted into some different standing postures. These deepen the breathing power of our bones, and help to both prevent and heal chronic illness. Much chronic illness is simply “sick chi” stored in our bone marrow. When we breathe it out, the sickness goes away. What appeared to be terminal illness, gradually becomes forgotten. This is why qigong has such a good reputation (based on track record) of healing chronic illness in China. In the Breathing and Rooting course I describe the two different kinds of grounding that people commonly need, which are quite different. One is grounding into the physical earth below our feet, and correspondingly, into the physical tissue of our body. The second is energetic grounding into your meridians and the core channels that define your Energy Body. Reviewed by Michael Winn on Amazon: As a 30 year I Ching user, teacher of Taoist qigong and inner alchemy meditation, I was very skeptical when yet another I Ching translation arrived in the mail. But I knew Karcher’s scholarship was superb and was hoping for at least a few gems. Was I surprised to discover that this is the best I Ching I’ve ever used – it literally lives up to its name, The Total I Ching. I used to consult both the Wilhelm (elegant, but too confucian) and Wu Jing-Nuan’s “shamanic” Chou version to get a full spectrum of readings. Karcher’s Total I Ching version is both elegant, scholarly, and shamanic. It brilliantly integrates in the living elements of the shen (spirits) who are actually the agents of change, we could say the “managers” of shifts in the larger chi field that play out in our bodies and lives. There is only one test of an I Ching, and that is to use it in real life situations and see how “alive” and accurate the responses are for you. I found this version to be far superior to the other readings I previously used. Yin & Yang trigrams can be reduced to abstract and lifeless mathemtical symbols, or they can be experienced as living pulsations, voices from inner space. Total I Ching opens up the voices of the spirits, without losing the bracing clarity of the symbolic language. I am thrilled to find such a breakthrough work in a field of translations that are generally lacking in spiritual brilliance. Tao of Giving, Receiving & Thanking
Thanksgiving is my favorite American ritual celebration. I think it has the least cultural or religious clutter, and is the most grounded, as it is really about appreciating the Earth for its gifts of food and sharing. We’ll ignore what the Pilgrims later did to the Native Americans who fed them… Here’s my essay (updated) on the Tao of Giving Thanks. It relates to the simple concept of which way the Life Force (chi, or Qi) is flowing. The chi field always has three streams. The Holy Taoist Trinity of daily life: Yang = Giving, Yin = Receiving, and Yuan = Thanking (Gratitude) for What Is. I personally am deeply thankful for all that I have Received this last year — appreciation from you, my dear reader, love from my family and friends, my students, the powerful energy fields we’ve created together on summer retreats. For the amazing blessing of finding my next life partner, Jem, who I plan to marry in China next spring. For all my qigong and internal alchemy practices that evolve my soul and sustain my good health. I am thankful for the elementals in my home and surrounding Nature who hold form for all beauty and space for all process. I am grateful for all the marvelous wonders I encounter daily on my path and the pleasures and pains in life that motivate me to continue changing. I’m thankful to the next phase of my spiritual journey, one that I still hope includes Conscious Conception. Grateful that I’ve come to realize it is not about a couple consciously conceiving a child, but about us becoming conscious of the process of how the Great Tao conceives everything.
I am equally grateful for all I have been privileged to Give, in large and small Ways, to creatures tiny as a lady bug I’ve smiled to and huge as a galaxy I hold in my heart. I’m grateful for human lives I’ve helped transform in a few miraculous moments; for the gift of my unique soul’s Presence felt in seen and unseen worlds. Taoist love a good trinity, and this trinity of Giving, Receiving and Thanking is as holy as any. Giving and Receiving could be seen as yin-yang expressions. We are radiating yang chi out when we give, and cultivating yin chi when we receive. Finding the right balance between the two is a lifetime art. Give too much and we exhaust ourself. Take too much and we are bogged down by possessions or worse, greed limits our ability to love. Thanking, or feeling gratitude, is a kind of neutral constant. It is the still force that stabilizes yin and yang. Whether we are giving or receiving or hanging out in stillness, what’s important is to do it naturally, as the effortless unfolding of one’s inner nature. Lao Tzu described this wu wei process as “doing nothing, yet leaving nothing undone”. Gratitude, at its extreme a feeling of awe, is a primal feeling we hold for the Life Force. The Chi (Qi) empowers everything in Heaven and Earth, including the Original Spirit or Creator God of this Cosmos.
