I was wondering, since freeform brought it up – how many people have investigated this little diagram? I like it alot. Poll:
1. Are you into the Enneagram?
2. What’s the best book you read on it?
3. What’s your type, if you car to shar?Me:
1. Obviously I like it and it has helped me by furnishing me with all sorts of data about myself, but it’s more diagnosis than cure of course.
2. ‘Personality Types’.
3. 4 with strong 5 wing, secondary type 1 with 2 wing. The secondary type was given to me by someone with a pendulum and an opinion many moons ago but it does seem to fit. I have a feeling 4 comes from my mum and 1 from my dad… but anyhoo.

I guess my answer to your first poll question is no, since
I don’t know what this is, or what you are talking about 🙁Can you please enlighten me? 🙂
August 21, 2007 at 8:04 pm #23820.freeform.Participant1. Yes I’ve gotten a lot of benefit from it – when I first read about my type it was like a bomb exploding in my heart – the first thing that struck me was how it showed all my hidden aspects, my hidden agendas and all my patterns in plain light.
Steven – most people approach the enneagram as a personality typing system – ofcourse I see it more than just that. It’s not a simple ego profile. There are 9 types – it’s based on the condition of each of the 3 dan tiens and and how you handle the lifeforce. Imagine a prism refracting the pure lifeforce into 9 separate colours – each one of the 9 has a specific way of manifesting the lifeforce.
2. Dr. Bill Schafer – I somehow happened on his tapes, he goes very deep with it – not been able to find anything else by him. He trains psychotherapists. Also Thomas Condon is very good. there is a link below – he has some good information there for people new to the enneagram. There is also a huge amount of free information on the net with a bit of searching around…
3. I’m a 9 – not sure about wings though.
Jason – I feel the 4 in you… definately not 1 though (I could be talking crap).
August 21, 2007 at 8:05 pm #23822NnonnthParticipantTheir article focuses on the Gurdjieff connection but since then there have been more pop books by Riso/Hudson and Helen Palmer for example. No-one quite knows how it works but it’s a personality typology of sorts with 9 different types of character. j
August 21, 2007 at 8:07 pm #23824NnonnthParticipantI didn’t know about Schafer or Condon and this is why I like to throw these things out there I will definitely have a look at those/ I know what you mean about the exploding bomb. Yeah the 4 is more obvious but the 1 is definitely there. I would NEVER have had you as a 9, not in a million trillion years, but I’m completely crap at guessing people’s types, so there you are. j
August 21, 2007 at 8:45 pm #23826.freeform.ParticipantMy online personality is more akin a 5… you can tell the 9ness by how I tend to bring things into neutral (notice any post with a strong good – bad, right – wrong polarity, I always go the predictable route of relativity (there is no good or bad but thinking makes it so)) I’m more ‘unassuming’ and ‘easy going’ in person.
I’m good at spotting 4’s – (I have a type 4 girlfriend) – you guys are very interpersonally aware! jeeze… oh and emotion – you know how I was saying in a post to Steven how kids don’t care what kind attention they get as long as they get some – I find it the same with 4’s and emotion. If it’s negative emotion and you’re in deep pain you become kind of ‘special’ – ‘beautiful scar’ comes to mind… Being a 9 I have problems with anger (by repressing it) – so my girlfriend gets me angry and I go quiet and stubborn and she feels the anger there under the surface and for her it’s exciting, she has no idea why I cant take pleasure in being angry… shheesh…
It’s interesting how the types are connected to the dan tiens – type 9’s and 8’s and 1’s are belly centered – 4’s are heart centered – when I put my attention onto you, Jason, I can kind of ‘become’ you (this is not a special feat for a 9) and feel a big spaciousness and expansiveness in the heart… that’s why I don’t see the 1ness in you.
AA might be a 1 (guessing here)
August 21, 2007 at 9:30 pm #23828voiceParticipantIt is interesting that my name and birthdate also come out to the number 5.
Type 1 Perfectionism 66%
Type 2 Helpfulness 26%
Type 3 Image Awareness 53%
Type 4 Sensitivity 53%
Type 5 Detachment 80%
Type 6 Anxiety 60%
Type 7 Adventurousness 40%
Type 8 Aggressiveness 53%
Type 9 Calmness 50%August 21, 2007 at 9:48 pm #23830NnonnthParticipant>>AA might be a 1 (guessing here)<<
Yeah my best guess would be that too. And Intelligence is a 5… yeah now I can feel that difference between you and an actual five, you're right your surface comes across more five like. Mind you I don't necessarily agree with all the official type descriptions, but then as a 4 I naturally try to get out of any box someone tries to put me in hahahaha. The Rum Tum Tugger – 'always on the wrong side of every door'. Yeah woundedness as empowerment… but then you get the dirt-becomes-a-pearl thing, if you do it right… (perfectionism). Sh*t those descriptions are pretty spot on actually. But what I don't like is where they type all these celebs because I think people might look at it and go, I have to be like that. BTW the interpersonal awareness is kind of reflexive for a 4 and it can't easily be turned off! 🙂
The tan tien thing is VERY fascinating I agree. I was trying to figure out long ago how it is that the types spring from that. I was doing it hermetic-wise but in taoist terms I thought maybe in each triad you had one type that was yin with respect to the particular centre, one that was yang, and one that was yuan so to speak or neutral.
I thought the 3-6-9 grouping is neutral to their respective tan tien, or better put, the ego wishes strongly to be neutral w/ respect to it – 3 to heart, 6 to head, 9 to gut, that is when I say neutral I mean they want to not put personal input into the centre, to have a completely void relation with it. Then maybe 4 and 2 are like yang and yin in the heart respectively. 8 yang to gut, yang meaning that you'd *only* want to put your personal self in there, 1 yin to gut, meaning you'd *never* want to put yourself in there. 5 yang to head, 7 yin to head, 6 neutral to head. I never got further with it than that.
I also thought it was fascinating that the 9-point figure was involved and no-one quite knew how it worked. In kabbalah 9 means moon and you see a sort of mini-enneagram in (for example) Rawn Clark's Eight Temples meditation for the moon. It's the seat of the personality so that fits but I would love to know more about the history of it and where it came from. Wasn't it a Sufi thing to start with?
I did once in meditation realize the reflexiveness of the personality in a diagramlike way, it was trying to overcome death was what it looked like (how 4-ish to say that!) but I can't quite it describe it to you. But each time has a way of overcoming death by putting energy in a pattern.
It's a fascinating shape, the diagram itself I mean, I meditated on it alot at one time. I did notice something very interesting to me which was that it looks very much like a star-of-david style hexagram, but with the points of the downward-pointing triangle 'divided' off from where they should be. That fits real well with the moon thing to me, it's a halfway between sun-eternal self and earth-normal self, and it mediates the sunlight but adds a quality of difference in the downward pointing triangle, that is the earth part.
I had notes on this somewhere!

August 21, 2007 at 9:59 pm #23832NnonnthParticipantOr did you know that already?
I don’t think the numbers have a meaning they are just labels for the points of the diagram. j
August 21, 2007 at 11:04 pm #23834voiceParticipantTo continue with the theme of 5, I took two versions of it in 2005. I should probably take it again. I know that the enneagram numbers don’t correspond with the numerology numbers, but I thought it was kind of…synchronistic (?)
August 22, 2007 at 1:01 am #23836StevenModeratorI read the descriptions off of some of the links you guys provided,
and using an internal feel I gathered my impressions of what
I thought I’d be.Then I found some online tests and I took a few to confirm.
Some tests said I’m a 5 with 1 in close second.
Some tests said I’m a 1 with 5 in close second.Pretty much I consider it a tie: 5 and 1.
Of course, I don’t think that surprises anyone 🙂

I am flattered that someone would want to guess my number.
I will respond by saying that you, Jason, and I have much more in common than you might like to think.
