Dear Michael,
I have been following your Qigong Fundamentals 1 program for about a month now, specifically focusing on “Inner Smile” meditation, “Ocean Breathing”, “Tossing out the sick qi”, and sitting healing sounds. I am saving the animal movements for later, as I want to focus on emotional issues of fear (social anxiety), anger, and sadness right now. I am excited that I’m beginning to feel a connection between the sounds and corresponding organ spirits. Just yesterday, as a result of doing the “chu” sound while lying in bed, not at all thinking about my kidneys (as I would in the formal practice), I observed a very strong pulsing sensation in my kidneys. I’ve also felt my heart spirit strongly during the “Inner Smile”, and my Tan Tien opening up more easily the more I practice Ocean Breathing. Thank you for these very effective techniques!
My question is in regards to Reiki. I read an article (link included) entitled “Reiki and Chi Kung” (by Glenn Derrick), and was curious about a claim it made that follows:
“…the ability to do Reiki is not developed through learning and practice, but comes from a process of Divine grace. The ability to do Reiki healing is simply channeled through the Reiki master to the practitioner during the attunement process. Years of study and discipline are not necessary. Imagine my surprise during my first Reiki class when I observed the astral images of guides and healing spirits pouring forth bright shimmering rays of healing energy at the hands of novice practitioners only three hours after the first class started!”
Are you familiar with the practice of Reiki, and if so, do you have an opinion on whether I can add this practice to Qigong Fundamentals? I guess it appeals to me because of claims this and other articles make on its health benefits and ease of doing on oneself and others.
Thank you for your time!

Reiki, as mostly taught, is in my opinion, a fragment of an old Atlatnean method. It’s incomplete, essentially a shen method, whcih is why many reiki practitioners have turned to Taoist practices to go deeper, to also penetrate to the jing level.
You can only go so far channelling other beings – it is very attractive and empowering in the beginning, it seems like fast progress. It is good to align with higher forces – I do it all the time, invoke Tao Immortals and align with natural deities like the earth, sun, moon, and star beings. I consider natural deities, which have bodies, to be far more powerful than disembodied spirits from somewhere else that you don’t understand or have a natural connection to.
But in the end, your allies cannot do your inner work, so dependence on them can stagnate your spiritual advancement. You have to find your own center, not become an appendage of some higher being’s center. That is your job as a human fulfilling your spiritual mission.
There is no conflict with qigong. REiki is a kind of shengong. I have taken similar attunements, decades ago, and since moved beyond them with what i found in the inner alchemy practices. It is mostly a question of what to spend your time and money on. I think your extra time is better spent learning the Wudang orbit – that will penetrate much deeper to the jing level, and strengthen your shen. you are already a deity – just need to mature it.
