My daughter just graduated from a well respected school of therapeutic massage. About 20 years ago I read an interview of Mantak Chia saying that he was distressed to see how so many massage therapists didn’t protect themselves when doing their work and, as a result, became depleted. I’ve spoken with some massage therapist who say there is no need to protect oneself when giving massages, and that the idea of doing so is based on needless fear. I am not interested in proving either stance right or wrong. I am interested in people’s experiences and, if they felt they needed it, the actual techniques they use to prevent being depleted by the stress of their clients. I would like to present a list of options to my daughter to see if she would be interested in this. The school she went to did talk about this, but not, I think in a great deal of detail or in terms of specific protective techniques. Thank you.

I’m not a massage therapist, but let me say a few words.
And rather than maybe give a direct answer, let me
instead give you some ideas to play with,
some food for thought, and then you can make up
your own mind as to what you think you should do. ^_^

I agree with the main point about not having fear about it.

    Reason:
If you fear the loss of energy, then vital energy from the
kidneys is radiated off as fear. People nearby
“collect” this wasted energy either unintentionally
or intentionally (i.e. vampirism). So then you end up
feeling drained, but ultimately YOU are the cause
not the other person! You become “your own worst
enemy” that has created a self-fulfilling negative prophecy.

SURE there are energy vampires out there, but is it
really worth worrying about? You probably would waste
more energy worrying about such things then the few
times you come into contact with strong vampires anyway.

Bottom line is, I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

    OK?

But then I suppose I’d hear the response, “OK, I won’t
worry about it, but what should I do anyway, just to be
    sure. ” 😉

Of course, such a question is basically a cleverly disguised
way to say that you are worried about it . . . but, nonetheless,
    I’ll play . . .

IF one really feels the need for “some kind of protection”,
there are any number of things one can do.
    I’ll mention just a few . . . (and only a few, as one
can really get carried away with paranoia) . . .

    One (simple, requires no effort):
Wear a charm around your neck made out
of Labradorite (a mineral). It helps protect you
from psychic vampires and others that try to tap
into your energy, plug into your aura. Helps
maintain integrity and cohesiveness in your energy body.

    Two:
Do the Belt Channel meditation (See Fusion 2)
or Belt Channel qigong (or both).
This helps to, again, maintain energetic boundaries
    between yourself and others.

Keep your boundaries stable, and then any massage is
simply a matter of performing “exercise”. On that
level, getting “tired” is just getting tired from
doing exercise, not from energy drain.

If that is the case, namely getting tired from
the exercise, then that is an indicator that one
needs to build up the body. Doing things like
standing meditation/Yiquan, daily walking, Tao Yin,
cardio, (all in moderation) as well as daily qigong
(I’d recommend Deep Healing Qigong)would be the
apt prescription. Note: DHQ has a number of
segments of belt qigong, as well.

OF COURSE, if you build up your body *enough*, then
one hardly needs to worry about what the effect (others
may have on you) is anyway! This approach, ultimately, is the
much better one. It is an empowering strategy, instead
of a disempowering one. I.E. Work on building up your
own body, and the influence of others becomes irrelevant.

And this, ironically, cycles right back to the beginning of the discussion.

Ultimately, there is no need to have any kind of fear whatsoever.

Hope that gives you some ideas to play with ^_^

    Smiles,
    Steven
