Tao Holy Trinity: Giving, Receiving & Thanking

Tao, the Natural Way, can be described as a path for humans to experience three fundamental virtues.

The Holy Trinity of daily life: Giving, Receiving, and Thanking (Gratitude).

I personally am deeply thankful for all that I have Received this last year — appreciation from you, my dear reader, love from my family and friends, my students, the powerful energy fields we’ve created together on summer retreats. For the amazing experiences we shared in China. For all my qigong and internal alchemy practices that evolve my soul and sustain my good health. I am thankful for the elementals in my home and surrounding Nature who hold form for all beauty and space for all process.

I am grateful for all the marvelous wonders I encounter daily on my path and the pleasures and pains in life that motivate me to continue changing. I’m thankful to the goddesses helping me to explore a new phase of my spiritual journey, one that I still hope includes Conscious Conception. Grateful that I’ve come to realize it is not about a couple consciously conceiving a child, but about us becoming conscious of the process of how the Great Tao conceives everything.

I am equally grateful for all I have been privileged to Give, in large and small Ways, to creatures tiny as a lady bug I’ve smiled to and huge as a galaxy I hold in my heart. I’m grateful for human lives I’ve helped transform in a few miraculous moments; for the gift of my unique soul’s Presence felt in seen and unseen worlds.

Taoist love a good trinity, and this trinity of Giving, Receiving and Thanking is as holy as any. Giving and Receiving could be seen as yin-yang expressions. We are radiating yang chi out when we give, and cultivating yin chi when we receive. Finding the right balance between the two is a lifetime art. Give too much and we exhaust ourself. Take too much and we are bogged down by possessions or worse, greed limits our ability to love.

Thanking, or feeling gratitude, is a kind of neutral constant, whether giving or receiving or hanging out in stillness, what Lao Tzu described as “doing nothing, yet leaving nothing undone”. Gratitude, at its extreme a feeling of awe, is a primal feeling we hold for the Life Force. The Chi (Qi) empowers everything in Heaven and Earth, including the Original Spirit or Creator God of this Cosmos. I am certain this Primary force or entity feels, on some multi-dimensional scale, humble gratitude for the Wuji, its own Unknowable Source.

During this period around the Winter Solstice, the natural day of Holy Darkness and deep silence, and its myriad cultural and religious expressions (Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanza, etc.), people naturally feel gratitude. Why feel it now, more than the rest of the year?

By Taoist (northern hemisphere) feeling, the chi of Nature is moving into the heart of Mother Earth very deeply as we approach the Great Yin moment of Winter Solstice. This inward flow naturally connects humans to a deeper level of inner heart-mind and core light or flame of the Self. We emerge, our yang/light renewed by the darkness. Those in the southern hemisphere will be on an opposite cycle of expansion/yang shifting to yin.

Our heart felt gratitude for life overflows into human culture as the giving of gifts and the receiving of them, just as the primordial-yuan chi or neutral force is always birthing the yin and yang movement of creation. So if we can tap into that natural feeling while both giving and receiving gifts, this holy-day season will be a much deeper experience.

Gifts can be of many different kinds – practical, aesthetic, sentimental, edible, playful-toys, educational, etc.

I personally prefer to give gifts that transform and heal. That just reflects who I am.

I know some people are still fearful because of the uncertainty they feel about the economy or the shrinking size of their savings. Your concerns are real, my heart goes out to you. I have been so poor I couldn’t afford to buy a newspaper. I recall reading the front cover of the New York Times at a street kiosk in NYC.The vendor looked at me and sneered, “Whaddya think this is – a library?” The petty humiliations the poor suffer….not to mention hunger and poor health care. Cultivating the Life Force empowers anyone to endure the slings and arrows of life’s misfortunes.

My philosophy is that money is better spent on self-healing and self-transformation rather than having it deflated, inflated, or dissolved into the thin air of a rising or falling economy. You cannot take your money with you at death, only the refined essence of Self and its wisdom will pass through the Veil. So spending it wisely before it is scattered by death is a great pleasure.

Life goes on, even during Recessions and Depresions, so the best time to transform your life or help those you love to transform is always NOW. The Universe invariably supports you when you invest in what is essential in yourself and others.

A Whale of a Christmas Story

There was a front page story of the San Francisco Chronicle about a female humpback whale who had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso, a line tugging in her mouth.

A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farallon Islands (outside the Golden Gate ) and radioed an environmental group for help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so bad off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her.

They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her. When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, and nudged them, pushed them gently around as she was thanking them.

Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives.

The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth said her eyes were following him the whole time, and he will never be the same.

May you, and all those you love, be so blessed and fortunate to be surrounded by people who will help you get untangled from the things that are binding you. And, may you always feel gratitude for the joy of giving and receiving.

As a 30 year I Ching user, teacher of Taoist qigong and inner alchemy meditation, I was very skeptical when yet another I Ching translation arrived in the mail. But I knew Karcher’s scholarship was superb and was hoping for at least a few gems. Was I surprised to discover that this is the best I Ching I’ve ever used – it literally lives up to its name, The Total I Ching.

I used to consult both the Wilhelm (elegant, but too confucian) and Wu Jing-Nuan’s “shamanic” Chou version to get a full spectrum of readings. Karcher’s Total I Ching version is both elegant, scholarly, and shamanic. It brilliantly integrates in the living elements of the shen (spirits) who are actually the agents of change, we could say the “managers” of shifts in the larger chi field that play out in our bodies and lives.

There is only one test of an I Ching, and that is to use it in real life situations and see how “alive” and accurate the responses are for you. I found this version to be far superior to the other readings I previously used. Yin & Yang trigrams can be reduced to abstract and lifeless mathemtical symbols, or they can be experienced as living pulsations, voices from inner space. Total I Ching opens up the voices of the spirits, without losing the bracing clarity of the symbolic language.

I am thrilled to find such a breakthrough work in a field of translations that are generally lacking in spiritual brilliance. Total Ching is a must have for I Ching lovers.
