I was recently reading “The Book of Five Rings”, which is an ancient Japanese text on swordsmanship, and the author Musashi talks of the “timing of the environment” and the importance to “understand it”.
It’s a very interesting idea, the “timing of the environment”. What is he referring to?
I connect this to the Primordial Form, to dissolving the timing of the movements of my body into the environment’s subconscious timing. To become one with it. Which is a profound practice.
I also heard recently a statement that Nature is already in the Absolute, which perhaps is why it has such a positive effect on us.

Because of the precession of the equinoxes, the seasonal cycle does not remain exactly synchronized with the position of the Earth in its orbit around the Sun. As a consequence, the tropical year is about 20 minutes shorter than the time it takes Earth to complete one full orbit around the Sun as measured with respect to the fixed stars (the sidereal year).
-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropical_yearEarth’s rotation is the rotation of the planet Earth around its own axis. The Earth rotates from the west towards east. As viewed from North Star or polestar Polaris, the Earth turns counter-clockwise.
-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth%27s_rotationA lunar mansion is a segment of the ecliptic (often called a station, or house) through which the moon moves in its orbit around the earth, often used by ancient cultures as part of their calendar system. In general, though not always, the zodiac is divided into 27 or 28 segments relative to fixed stars – one for each day of the lunar month, which is 27.3 days long – and the position of the moon is charted with respect to those fixed segments. Since the position of the moon at given stage will vary according to the position of the earth in its own orbit, the mansions of the moon are an effective system for keeping track of the passage of seasons.
-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_mansionMaybe one should first understand how much Japanese culture have been influenced by Chinese civilization however hostile they have been towards each other quite recently.
Anyway I would suggest to study instead Antony Cummins’ (with Yoshie Minami) ‘The Book of Ninja’.
And with that of course Stephen K. Hayes’ ‘The Complete Ninja Collection’.
These are for the Ninja spirit.
More importantly I would suggest to learn survival.
Tom Brown Jr., John “Lofty” Wiseman etc.
…it’s a very interesting idea, the “timing of the environment”. What is he referring to?…
It simply refers first of all to ability to understand natural rhythms.
So one should learn to observe really practically how for example Sun and Earth interact.
How this interaction is expressed as diurnal cycle, how this is expressed as a solar year. etc.

Ps. In my opinion yoga and survival are important, but swordsmanship is not. Of course it might be different if somebody would invent that kind of Star Wars type of lightsaber.

-http://www.slowmovement.com/natural_rhythms.phpMarma points are very important elements of Ayurvedas healing power. Developed in India centuries ago, these energy points profoundly affect the body, mind and spirit and facilitate the deepest levels of healing. Prana is the current of energy that infuses every cell within the body. Stimulating marmani (energy points) directly taps into this reservoir of energy and promotes health.
-http://www.gentleawakeningga.com/treatments/marma-pointsOne should of course understand that natural rhythms are also that kind of microcosmic bodily phenomena like one is starting to study for example with nadi vijnana and marma bindu chikatsa.
Maybe these one should understand as a kind of internal environment timing.
Sorry for my broken English.

I am interested now in moving beyond training, to direct contact with the reality and letting it teach you.
If you seek to buy these books -which look good, good people- then you are doing something different to my interest.
I am interested in sinking into the environment, disappearing into it, merging with it. Perhaps it is a long-term goal.
It is fascinating to understand this knowledge about the celestial bodies … with our minds. But I would like that knowledge to be inside the body, to hear life speaking directly and not need books anymore.
I have no plans to study any swords, but I see that they are used to study the environment.
In another direction, I was reflecting on the difference between the Samurai and the Ninja. I read Samurai = Warrior and Ninja = Assassin. The day and the night.
And my sense is something like you are an assassin when you don’t trust life, and a warrior when you do. Perhaps that is just a subjective perspective that represents my current state.

-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevala_Jnana#Literary_sourcesJainism (/ˈdʒeɪnɪzəm/ or /ˈdʒaɪnɪzəm/), traditionally known as the Jina śāsana or Jain dharma, belongs to the śramaṇa tradition and is one of the oldest Indian religions. It prescribes a path of nonviolence (ahimsa) towards all living beings. Practitioners believe non-violence and self-control are the means to liberation. The three main principles of Jainism are non-violence, non-absolutism (anekantavada) and non-possessiveness (aparigraha). Followers of Jainism take 5 major vows: non-violence, not lying, not stealing (asteya), chastity, and non-attachment. Self-discipline and asceticism are thus major focuses of Jainism. Jain cosmology postulates an eternal universe and divides worldly cycle of time into two parts or half-cycles, ascending (utsarpani) and descending (avasarpani).
-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JainismParasparopagraho Jīvānām (Sanskrit) is a Jain aphorism from the Tattvārtha Sūtra [5.21]. It is translated as “Souls render service to one another”. It is also translated as, “All life is bound together by mutual support and interdependence.”
-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parasparopagraho_JivanamKevala jñāna means omniscience in Jainism and is roughly translated as absolute knowledge or supreme knowledge. Kevala jnana is believed to be an intrinsic quality of all souls. This quality is masked by karmic particles that surround the soul. Every soul has the potential to obtain omniscience by shedding off these karmic particles. Jain scriptures speak of twelve stages through which the soul achieves this goal. A soul who has attained kevala jnana is called a kevalin (केवलिन्) According to the Jains, only kevalins can comprehend objects in all aspects and manifestations; others are only capable of partial knowledge. The views of two sects of Jainism, Digambara and Śvētāmbara Jains slightly differ on the subject of kevalins. According to Digambaras, a kevalin does not experience hunger or thirst, whereas according to Svetambaras, a kevalin has normal human needs. According to both traditions, the last kevalin was a disciple of one of the eleven chief disciples of the last tirthankara, Mahāvīra; his name is recorded as Jambu. It is also believed that no one after Jambu will have the ability to obtain kevala jnana.

October 8, 2015 at 4:04 pm #44817c_howdyParticipantEratosthenes calculated the circumference of the Earth without leaving Egypt. Eratosthenes knew that at local noon on the summer solstice in the Ancient Egyptian city of Swenet (known in ancient Greek as Syene, and now as Aswan) on the Tropic of Cancer, the Sun would appear at the zenith, directly overhead. He knew this because he had been told that the shadow of someone looking down a deep well in Syene would block the reflection of the Sun at noon off the water at the bottom of the well. Using a gnomon, he measured the Sun’s angle of elevation at noon on the solstice in Alexandria, and found it to be 1/50th of a circle (7°12′) south of the zenith. He may have used a compass to measure the angle of the shadow cast by the Sun. Assuming that the Earth was spherical (360°), and that Alexandria was due north of Syene, he concluded that the meridian arc distance from Alexandria to Syene must therefore be 1/50th of a circle’s circumference, or 7°12’/360°.

As he aged he contracted ophthalmia, becoming blind around 195 BC. Losing the ability to read and to observe nature plagued and depressed him, leading him to voluntarily starve himself to death. He died in 194 BC at the age of 82 in his beloved Alexandria.

Sorry, but I think that there are some really confused and naive ideas.
I mentioned primitive survival & technology (Tom Brown, Jr.; Lofty Wiseman), because it’s possible to start to understand deep laws of nature with simple observations and instruments.
Yes and there, in the end, healthy and keen mind is of utmost importance.

Ps. One should make notice that somewhere Tom Brown, Jr has admitted that he never went even to college. So one wouldn’t expect him to be very good mathematician.

The clan includes assassins such as the Elder Sub-Zero, the Younger Sub-Zero, Cyrax, Sektor, Smoke, and Frost.
-http://mortalkombat.wikia.com/wiki/Lin_KueiBy 1184, Yoshinaka’s luck had run out and he died in the battle. (Shima Kosanta Minamoto no) Kanesada had meanwhile been wounded in many places as he cut his way through 3,000 horsemen under Fujiwara Hidehira, and had collapsed from his severe injuries. He was rescued by a Taoist sage known by the epithet Kasumi-gakure-“Hiding in the mist”- and escaped with him to the mountains of Iga. In time the sage accepted him as his student, and trained him in the martial ways of Ninjutsu.
-MASAAKI HATSUMI, The Way of the Ninja-Secret techniquesTsujigiri (辻斬り or 辻斬 tsuji-giri, literally ‘crossroads killing’) is a Japanese term for a practice when a samurai, after receiving a new katana or developing a new fighting style or weapon, tests its effectiveness by attacking a human opponent, usually a random defenseless passer-by, in many cases during nighttime. The practitioners themselves are also referred to as tsujigiri.
-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TsujigiriEn no Ozunu, also En no Ozuno, Otsuno (役小角?) (b. 634, in Katsuragi; d. c. 700707) was a Japanese ascetic and mystic, traditionally held to be the founder of Shugendō, the path of ascetic training practiced by the gyōja or yamabushi. He was banished by the Imperial Court to Izu Ōshima on June 26, 699 AD, but folk tales at least as old as the Nihon Ryōiki (c. 800) recount his supernatural powers and exploits. He also referred to by the name En no Gyōja (役行者 “En the ascetic”?), En no Ubasoku (役優婆塞 “En the lay monk”?) , or under the full name En no Kimi Ozunu, where Kimi (君?) is his kabane or titular name.
-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/En_no_Gy%C5%8DjaIshikawa Goemon (石川 五右衛門?, 1558 October 8, 1594) was a semi-legendary Japanese outlaw hero who stole gold and valuables and gave them to the poor. Goemon is notable for being boiled alive along with his son in public after a failed assassination attempt on the civil war-era warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi. His legend continues to live on in contemporary Japanese popular culture, often with greatly exaggerated ninja skills.
-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ishikawa_GoemonOne could get impression that Japanese have been always exceedingly warring.
First of all if one would like to have quickly mental image of EN NO GYOJA, maybe one could think for example Merlin of the Arthurian legend and secondly with ISHIGAWA GOEMON one could think Robin Hood of the English folklore; these are easy choices because they are so well known.

Sorry, but these are too simple intuitions and misguided.
More original Ninja, whether in China or Nippon, one should look from hermit practitioners or warrior monks who have been living outside of society and been mostly very despised.
Compare also Liáng Tǐng’s ‘Skills of the Vagabonds’.

One tells how his father was the head of a temple shrine who had raped his mother, the daughter of a blacksmith. Another sees him as the offspring of a temple god. Many give him the attributes of a demon, a monster child with wild hair and long teeth. In his youth, Benkei may have been called Oniwaka (¹íÈô?)¡ª”demon/ogre child”, and there are many famous ukiyo-e works themed on Oniwakamaru and his adventures. He is said to have defeated 200 men in each battle he was personally involved in. He joined the cloister at an early age and travelled widely among the Buddhist monasteries of Japan. During this period, monasteries were important centres of administration and culture, but also military powers in their own right. Like many other monks, Benkei was probably trained in the use of the naginata. At the age of seventeen, he was said to have been over 2 metres (6 ft 7 in) tall. At this point, he left the Buddhist monastery and became a yamabushi, a member of a sect of mountain ascetics who were recognisable by their black caps. Japanese prints often show Benkei wearing this cap. Benkei is said to have posted himself at Goj¨ Bridge in Kyoto, where he disarmed every passing swordsman, eventually collecting 999 swords. On his 1000th duel, Benkei was defeated by Minamoto no Yoshitsune, a son of Minamoto no Yoshitomo. Henceforth, he became a retainer of Yoshitsune and fought with him in the Genpei War against the Taira clan.
