I would like to know some specific Chi Gung or Taoist practices for pain. I remember that Steven suggested sending the inner smile to a painful area. I also recall that Mantak Chia said to hit an area of pain. Are there any other suggestions?
April 22, 2016 at 2:58 pm #46418frechtlingParticipantI usually try chi self-massage, that comes in handy depending on the pain. It depends on what type of pain you are having. Sometimes movement helps, especially Tai Chi for knees and back, and hitting can help as well as long as it doesn’t make it worse. I don’t have experience with using the wire hitters, etc., I just use my fist/hands for joints and muscles.
April 23, 2016 at 10:16 am #46420StevenModeratorInner Smile is best for healing acute physical injuries, where pain may or may not be involved, but for pain itself, it sort of depends on what the pain is about, as to whether or not something else might be more symptom-relieving.
As you mention, one of the best (general) ways to get symptom-relief for a painful area is by hitting the area (gently), but one could potentially get more targeted relief and abeyance of symptoms using other means, dependent on what the pain is about. Often pain is connected in with inflammation, and this also needs to be addressed.
*Chronic* pain issues can be complex. For chronic pain, there is an underlying need to address the root cause that is generating the pain. Without this, often permanent satisfying relief can be elusive. If it is this latter case, it’s a little bit more complicated than a couple paragraph soundbite, and it likely extends beyond what is reasonable to cover in a forum such as this.
In particular, if this is a complex personal issue, I might encourage you to enroll in my DHQ class, where I give people an opportunity to fill out a detailed private questionnaire on healing issues, which I address anonymously with specific recommendations in the classroom, as well as aspects of the form most helpful for certain issues.
