Dr. Chang Qings background in Chinese medicine and the internal cultivation arts contributed to his lifelong search for deep understanding of Classical Chinese Medicine (CCM).He credits Yian Yen Sheng MD with first introducing him to the conceptual view of the YIJING and the universal patterns that influence all life. He recognized that this YIJING View of the universe was very different from the ordinary worldview promoted by science and even modern TCM. The YIJING became useful in clarifying the pre-heaven and post heaven conditions affecting his patients and offered guidance in their lives as well as his diagnosis and treatment strategy with acupuncture, herbs and medical qigong.
The Daoist cultivation methods taught by Dragon Gate Master Wang Li Ping were instrumental in Dr. Chang opening the Heaven Cave of the nine palaces in the brain. This enhanced his understanding and practice of the Daoist healing arts and Classical Chinese Medicine (CCM).
Dr. Chang believes that in order to understand CCM, one must cultivate the mind style taught in the Classics and practiced by the old masters. As the Classics teach:
without De (Virtue) and an attitude of seeking atonement through humility, one will not be able to develop the mind of heaven necessary to cultivate the Dao. Lao Tzu
teaches Man follows Earth. Earth follows Heaven. Heaven follows the Way. The Way follows Nature. Cultivating this MacrocosmicView that the Dao regulates all life,
is essential to assisting humanitys understanding that individual fulfillment depends on living in harmony with Nature and each other. In todays society the words of Lao Tzu and Dr. Chang are hidden as humans perpetuate their own suffering through self grasping and afflictions based upon desires that consume jing, disperse qi,
and unsettle the spirit.A cultivated physician must have the knowledge and skill to educate and inspire his or her patient in lifestyle wisdom, along with the ability to apply it correctly. S/he will be able to open their self to a calm, peaceful, and clear state using their heaven mind as well as all the senses to research, in detail, the condition of the patient. What part of the patient isdiseased?thechannels, organ(s), mind, soul, spirit, or subconscious? Once identified, how does one treat the diagnosed condition?
If the qi dynamic is diseased then the practitioner can treat the patient with the
appropriate diet, acupuncture, herbs, exercise,and/or rest. For acupuncture, perceiving the qi and understanding the qi field theory will guide the selection of the correct point, needle direction and manipulation as well as require the mind power to direct the qi. If the disease is rooted in the subconscious, this requires
a very high level of development and the open awareness to treat the spirit.Clearing pathology, harmonizing the qi flow, and stabilizing the Center (digestion/Middle Burner) are fundamental in assisting the patient in recovering their health. Because life depends upon grain, Dr. Chang- teaches that the Central
Qi must be strong in order to support the function of the five organs. To prevent
disease in the digestive tract, first make sure that the earth system is
cleared and open from the mouth to the anus. Then one is free to work with
acupuncture and herbs to support the Earth qi dynamics.Dr. Changs family style Tuina opens the Heaven, Human, and Earth gates and has
special methods for increasing the function of spleen and stomach. He also uses herbs with attention to qi direction and in specific combinations to regulate the qi and
massage the middle burner. The practitioner gains the confidence of the patient by maximizing production of the patients postnatal qi, thereby awakening the patients
interest in improving his or her life.If appropriate, at this point in clinical practice,Dr. Chang would introduce teachings on the three treasures, helping the patient understand that health and happiness depend upon the wise use of the life force. Dr. Chang teaches that jing,
qi and shen follow ones mind style. If one practices moral De (Virtue), then the qi flow will be smooth and harmonious, the shen will be calm and bright, and the jing will gather. He would identify the four stages of life (childhood, youth, declining body, and elderly) according to Daoist Huang Di Nei Jing, clarifying his strategy for optimizing the patients health. The basis of his strategy involves slowing the aging process through pre-heaven herbal therapy, and longevity wisdom methods from the Dragon Gate Immortalist
exercises. These Daoist methods consist of moving, standing, sitting, and reclining practices that harmonize the qi flow, fill the eight extraordinary vessels,
open the luo vessels, clear the mind and sub-conscious, transform the souls (hun and po),nourish the sea of marrow, and awaken the yuan shen (original spirit).Certainly, most patients come to the clinic for basic health care. But remember
our medical tradition has 1,000-year-old roots that became a way of life
in the Asian culture. As First Generation practitioners in the West, the responsibility lies with us to understand and cultivate this way of life. True development is best facilitated by an accomplished Master.Searching out this special relationship will truly further the growth of
Oriental medicine in this country. Remember the old masters researched
the qi within themselves and were able to elevate those around them and
truly assist their patients.ABOUT DR. CHANG QING:
