Please forgive me for such a beginner question, but this helps give me context for the distance I must travel.
Of course, the answer can be different for every man in every situation, but How long would a seasoned practitioner retain his semen?
I read somewhere that one should try a month, then three….then a year, then three years, and so on, until he learns to recirculate his energy completely within.
Please, I am looking for a guide to help me frame my progress.

It’s all completely personal, and everyone ultimately
comes into their own balance . . . to match what feels
right for them, to match their constitution, to match
their personal feelings, to match how much qigong practice
they do, to match their age, etc.It’s not a simple one-shot answer, I’m afraid. (pardon the pun)
As this has been discussed extensively before,

on semen retention, where I’m sure you will be given
lots of food for thought.S

Nevertheless, I’d still like to hear from others as to how they have done, how it has effected them, their ideas, learnings, recommendations.
It might be helpful to state that I am 48 years old and exhibit the symptoms of depletion from decades of excessive masturbation.
Do any of you out there recommend what might be good for me? Where I should start, what goals I should strive for regarding retention?

I’d recommend that you build up your kidneys . . .

If you wanted to save expenses, just getting the
Sexual Vitality DVD and Qigong Fundamentals 4 Video
to start, with a couple bottles of Goji, would probably
be the best cheap investment you could make.These things would be FAR more useful than trying to
come up with creative strategies to extend retention time,

It might be difficult to give you any advices just from you tellinig us you have a depletion from excess masturbation, beacese there might be different kind of energetic problems arising from that.
Anyway considering your age and that you think you have a depletion. Perhaps a guess from my side, without enough information, could be that you could try retention for one mounth.
Actually you can check your length of period of time by masturbating or having sex to ejacualtion and then notice the time it takes for you to get morning erections or easily get a hard one when you are excited. This will give you an indication on how long it might be good for you to do retention.
Many texts in taosism tells you that at the age of 60 or above you should not ejaculate at all, even though you are healthy. If you are under this age you might ejaculate but not wery often if you are ower 50. If ówer 50 and unhealthy then perhaps not at all either.
There is a discussion going on on another thread about the white tigress system, which is a taoists like cultivation system. But a more strange one. Anyway I want to recomend you a book from that system. “The sexual teaching of the jade dragon” By Hsi Lai. In this system you get also other perspectives besides retention and dual cultivation. There is different things you can eat if you have different problems with your sperm for instance. And different things you can eat to streangthen your Jing. And also some special herbs good for this to.
To do intercourse with a women are also wery good if you do retention. Her Yin will increase and streanthen your yang. That is if you have intercourse when you realy are ready, have a full erection with heat, which migth not be so often if you have a depletion.
So to do all this
1 read the book and eat some of the good things for your Jing
2 Do retention for one mounth at a time if you can do it without big problems. And try it out for yourself to see how it works for you
3 Combine this with regular practise of the basics in this system.
4 Exercise aerobics regularly
5 eat healthy food
6 Sleep well
7 No porn and only have sex when you realy are ready.
8 Going to an TCM doctor, acupunturist to look out the excact problems if there are anyRead the book carefully beacase some things should not be combined. For instance retention and eating the herbs that streanghten your Jing might be dangereous.
All these things might be things that you can try out according to me. And I am an practioner in this systme since ten year ,but not a teacher. I have been interested in the sexual practises since the beginning though.

the best advice i can give to you is:
retain ur semen and u will become stronger.
just FEEL and OBSERVE how much strenght u need and is good for.if u r too weak retain longer,if u have to much strenght/chi then u can burn it with work/sports or just ejaculate.
this is the best way to regulate the amount of energy withhin the body:feel and observe.too much chi,burn it or ejaculate,to low chi then longer retention.imo the best way to do retention.in this manner u can find out what period of retention is best for u.and u can learn too have a constant energylevel that works good for u.
maybe u find out that u never want to ejaculate,thats ok too.2 examples:i have a friend who really never ejaculates since many years.
i have a 2 weeks cycle atm.it is working best for me.more energy wont be good for me,coz i have emotional trouble and problems to work with.lesser energy wont be good coz i would feel then depressed und without motivation.

From my experience i tell you that you can retain sperm, but energy will loss.. This is two different things sperm and energy.
i can retain sperm very long, my experience is 3 months without ejaculation but my practice was wrong becouse energy loss when my muscles arbitrary contract, you can do it when your muscles is strong and with their power you can stop ejaculate but energy will gone.
Another way is when you good feel your orbit and you good doing big draw, but in this case i meet another problem is congestion of sperm. my solution is ejaculate, ejaculate minimum or going to first orgasm much close feel moving of sperm and stop ejaculate, becouse you have good control of sperm on first orgasm, when you feel 3-5 orgasm control of sperm is bad. But its just my expirience, you now what you need better.
