What a 7-Year Old Taoist Asks for Xmas?

When I asked my 7 year son Emerald what he wanted for Xmas, I already had a long list of toys he’d given to his mother. But which toys were more desirable – the robot that could dance,  or the saber-wand with flashing lights and noisy bleeps?

I was in for a shock. Without blinking, with no hesitation, he said.

“Daddy, I want FIVE things for Xmas”. He held  up 5 fingers:

1. “Dragon-headed staff, like your statue of Lao Tzu has. I’m writing a poem about dragons, so I need a dragon staff.

2. “Statue of Lao Tzu. You have 50 statues of Lao Tzu all over the house. I need MY own Lao Tzu to put in MY room.
3.”Picture of Lao Tzu. He is MY guardian, since you and Mommy invited him when you conceived me. I want the funny bump on his 3rd Eye and his face smiling at me, above my desk.
4. “Treasure chest with Yin-Yang and dragons on it. I need a place to store my special things.
5. “Walkie-Talkie set. After you buy the Emerald Forest and build the Temples of Heaven and Earth retreat center, we can talk to each other from anywhere! I need the kind that goes at least one mile.”

I sat there in stunned silence.

I thought of my childhood, with my exhausted parents, buying toys for seven children, and each of us looking with envy at what the others got.

Lots of parents complain about Christmas losing its spiritual magic, becoming too commercial.

I encourage Emerald to believe in Santa Claus. I feel it’s a good way to exercise his imagination, the single most valuable skill in life.

Emerald scoffs at older kids who tell him Santa Claus is not real, it’s just his parents. He feels special affinity with Rudolph’s red nose. In his Chinese astrology chart – which he discusses daily – he is a Fire Dog personality. Rudolph is clearly a Fire Deer. (I make sure he gets a present from Rudolph every year).

I had to explain to him that the  Lao Tzu presents he wants, Santa does not have at the North Pole. They could not even be found on the internet. That I led 21 China Dream Trips to collect them.

What to do? My only option is to start forking over my prized Lao Tzu collection. But he’s only 7 years old. After a few years of this, what will I have left?

Lao Tzu is the ONLY “thing” I collect. Everyone needs a vice. Maybe Emerald  is a stand-in for Lao Tzu – a guide on my path to wuji, to No-thing-ness?

Sigh,

CRYSTAL BOWLS

At Winter Solstice I will also debut my new collection of TWELVE crystal bowls and other musical instruments in a Gong & Sound Alchemy Crystal Bowl Concert.

The bowls have gems and minerals alchemically infused into the clear crystal:  ruby, diamond, emerald, tanzanite, indium, Mt. Shasta serpentine, Sedona red rock, amethyst, charcoal+platinum, lapis lazuli, gold. A musical treasure trove that sings about the celestial beauty of life.

Qi unfolds in three phrases as it steps itself down into physical realm:

SOUND. This is caused by the friction between Heaven and Earth Qi, which creates the

Michael Winn has 40 years international teaching experience in Tao medical, martial, & spiritual arts. He was a founder and two-term President, National Qigong Association (NQA).
