Avalotishvara Bodhisattva was originally a man-a student of Shakyamuni I think- but somehow his image changed into the Goddess of compassion Kuan Yin. Alot of statues of him/her have a very androgoys, sexless look.
I have also seen other statues of Bodhisattvas that have a very androgynous look and often portray both male and female characteristics.
Didn’t Winn write something about this recently? That the purpouse of incarnating to begin with was tog et back to the male/female state we supposedly lost somehow?
i don’t think Buddha explained it in those terms but I think the enlightenment experienced by thousands of people over the centuries leads to a similar state that transends one’s sex or conditioned boundaries.
But, then again, Shakyamuni’s teaching seems to be about freedom from ALL boundaries, whether they be sex, race, or even being a human being.
Release from conditioned, conceptual frameworks.
Not that I really have an experienc eof this that is deep enough to comment but the Zen perspective Alchemy seems to still be confined to a framework and a context. Not that I have any problem with that or think it is good or bad..just working from a different philisophical framework, atleast from the outset.
Perhaps as a few others have said at a higher level all these paths converge.
Thanks for posting that link. A beautiful yin presentation, a great contrast to the yang presentations of kung fu. Some things they did re-evoked feelings from my meditations.

I agree, practice is essential. Like you said to me once in Asheville just ” ask the universe what you should practice”.
My problem then becomes/became the question ” Ok, Mike Winn says I should just ask the universe what I should practice . Now..HOW do I ask this universe thing what to practice and how do I know the answers I get from this so called universe that is answering me are reliable?
From your teaching you follow a method. Atleast for the first years or so..you open the microcosmic orbit and gather the essences of your organ/shen to the pearl..open the cauldron and portal to prenatal with kan and li..and this, from my limited understanding of alchemy, gets you into a realtionship with the universe on an energetic/spiritual level.
Zen is saying that is not really how you contact the universe .You contact the real universe by letting go all your ideas and opinions of it. We are so full of ourselves and our mind is so busy formulating new, high tech ways to solve simple problems .The question then for me are all these high tech ways to supposedly high tech, complicated problems really necissary?
Like I read your empty vessel article to a friend of mine who is a christian preacher and he just said..that sounds way to complicated to be spirituality for me..way to hard to understand.
Maybe he just isn’t intelligent enough to get what your saying, he is a pretty simple guy but has a great heart. Very giving and humble.
Zen iss aying things are very simple. Tao is simple. Just let go all your opnions, judgements and ways of creating the self and the ten thousand things, let all of that go and see what everything really is. Just see clearly.
And that is just the first dhyana .It’s kindergarden in Buddhism. Just to get to a point of seeing clearly. I think your a genius of a guy and am not trying to say anyone is right or wrong but just don’t want to waste time. I think your alchemy is interesting but can it get me to the point where I cans ee life clearly or is just about playing with my chi? I have no real problem with playing with chi like some others and even if that may lead to a kind of immortality think that is fine..but will that at any time get me to the point where I am seeing life clearly? Or just add more to the too much that is already there? Thanks and I appreciate your openess.
It gets back to yin method, yang method, and wu wei method.
You use the method that suits you and the situation/cycle you are in.
but if you don’t learn the other methods besides yin – the receptive, then your path is limited to that. True wu wei method requires some mastery of yin and yang approaches first – otherwise you are simply hanging around, waiting for grace.
School looks difficult when you first start it. But after you’ve done it for a while, its not complicated, it becomes second nature. Inner alchemy is the same. If you spent 12 years studying spiritual methods insteqad of boring topics they teach in public schools, you’d be accomplished and grateful for the education. Just like you are grateful for reading, writing, math skills that let you engage the physical universe in new ways.
without developing chi skills and shen awareness/virtue, your spiritual skill level will be limited to accepting your post natal life as it arises. And that’s fine – its just a choice. I don’t have any judgement about what path people choose. You can achieve one level of peace and happiness that way.
Qigong is for the masses – a simple and useable health tool. But Inner alchemy is not for the masses. It is for people who want to go deeper, to shift dimensions, and engage wider and deeper fields of consciousness.
If you want simple, you can stay with the inner smile.
All esoteric schools have more rigorous methods of concentration and contemplation. Learning yin-yang and five phase methods is not relaly complicated or difficult – or even learning to apply them to higher octaves of concciousness. But it takes discipline. And don’t fool yourself into thinking that some other esoteric school doesn’t require that discipline.
But in my experience, the progressive training pays off – the most valuable education I’ve received in life.
