Alison Downey, aka Dancing Goddess of Exuberant Fun. She’s my new China Dragon 2012 Dream Trip Co-Leader. She first introduced me and Jem Minor, my bride-to-be, at an ecstatic dance in Asheville. So we’re inviting her to help officiate at our wedding atop Flower Mountain in June 2012.
Dear Lovers of Awakening their Original Self,
Today’s essay is about our power to awaken a Primordial Self-Love by cultivating Original Breath (yuan chi). But first, a note about Romantic Love. Deep thanks for hundreds of congratulatory emails on our wedding in China. I forwarded them to Jem, who was quite touched. We really appreciate your sending us love Chi, that’s the best wedding gift possible!
Jem, sporting a celtic mohair Tam o Shanter in Alaska. An old friend requested Jem shareher version of “our soul love story”, which I think is fair. Jem says she’ll do that when her busy schedule allows her time, perhaps around Winter Solstice (she’s deep into the Dark Goddess). But as you can see, she’s a bit shy….
We’re also delighted that so many very old friends and students are interested in coming to China for the combination spiritual adventure and wedding atop Mt. Hua. We’ve already signed up a writer for the New York Times (who lives in China, and written on topics like Taoist Revival in China), and a Taoist scholar looking to finish off the last chapter of hisChina Trippers book with a western Taoist wedding.
The powerful Chi (Qi) Field synergy generated by the trip members alone wil be awesome. Multiply that by some equally potent Taoist sacred mountain chi….and the addition of Alison Downey, my new co-trip leader, and things go from hot to sizzling!
Alison practices Chinese medicine in Asheville, N.C., has been to China twice, last time on the 2010 Dream Trip. Both Jem and I totally love Alison’s energy and exuberance. She is truly a Taoist Goddess, blended with a Sufi heart. She was a prime founder of the Asheville Movement Collective that sponsors the “Sweat Your Prayers” ecstatic dance circles where I met Jem.
Jem and I are indebted to Alison for her accidental match-making. She introduced us six months before we re-met at an ecstatic dance circle. But that planted a spark that burst into flames when we were finally ready to feel and play out our deep soul magnetic attraction. We are grateful Alison accepted our offer to become co-trip leader. She’ll make it easier for me and Jem, and more fun for everyone. She’s planning some side trips to Chinese medical facilties for those on the trip who are interested. Wherever she goes, her Goddess of Exuberant Fun title is well-earned!
In case you missed the earlier emails, I’m re-inviting YOU to the wedding. Links are below to trip itinerary and costs. We know that coming to China entails some planning and expense, and are happy to help with an extended payment plan. Students from the Kan & Li levels and past Dream Trippers are entitled to special discounts, please contact me for details. If you are thinking about doing the 2012 Water Dragon China Dream trip, better to let me know sooner rather than later. Just hit reply! There is currently plenty of space, but it could fill up. Yellow Mountain’s Bridge of the Immortals…. a fantastic Lover’s Leap (of the imagination).

Now, back to the topic of Primordial Self-Love. My thoughts have been stimulated by the book I am writing on Primordial Qigong/Tai Chi for Enlighenment, tentatively titled Tai Chi – A Path of Self-Love. This essay deals with three kinds of love: conditional, unconditional, and pure love.
I plan to share many of my new insights on this practice at my upcoming Primordial Tai Chi seminar and teacher training (open to all) in Asheville on Nov. 12-13, 2012. It includes Feldenkrais super-learning methods and other improved ways to both learn and teach the form.
Contact Jan at: info@HealingTaoUSA.com to register, or call 888 999 0555. Cost is unchanged for the last 10 years. For those travelling from out of town, a list of local lodgings is at the top of my Asheville Schedule page: https://healingtaousa.com/cgi-bin/articles.pl?rm=mode2&articleid=117
People who have been practicing the form (from the video) can obtain a stand alone certification. I will eventually list all certified instructors on my website. Mantak Chia loves the form, and had made its credit hours apply to Healing Tao instructor certification. (For details, see: https://healingtaousa.com/instructorbecome.html).
Are you ready for the wave of Eleven-ness that is coming on 11:11:11? That is a lot of One’s, or one-ness….read about it below!

Can you allow the Pearl of Pure Love to rediate Harmony & Balance in your body?
The form I’m teaching at my Asheville seminar on Nov. 12-13 has many names, because it doesn’t easily fit into any neat category. In Chinese, it’s Wu Ji Gong. Primordial Qigong and Tai Chi for Enlightenment are how I translate it into English. Other adepts give it other names.
I’ve recently added a new name, which is now my favorite: Tai Chi for Enlightened Love. For traditional tai chi martial artists, this name might seem a bit contrived and new agey. But I feel it definitely expresses the age-old truth of this form. Here is a short adaptation from my forthcoming book, tentatively titled Tai Chi – A Path of Self-Love, that relates this movement practice to three kinds of love – conditional, unconditional, and pure love:
Martial forms of Tai Chi are classically designed for self-defense, even though most modern players do it strictly for health benefits. Martial long forms, with up to 150 movements, require great physical self-discipline, which most modern people unfortunately cannot sustain given their busy lifestyles. I myself practice daily a long Northern Wu martial tai chi form to work my joints and cultivate a particular type of chi flow. Other times I do bagua zhang, to get my chi spiralling in the eight cosmic directions.
Both feed my body’s need for “high nutrient chi”, and are a way of loving my body. But to be honest, I have little interest in the fighting applications, even though I recognize they are key to understanding the martial movements. In one sense, the martial arts are loving in that they allow one to defend oneself without killing the opponent, by instead deflecting their attack/chi. It’s useful, but is this energy of “defensive love” what I want to constellate my core practice around?
Tai Chi for Enlightened Love, on the other hand, is designed for love. It gathers chi from the four directions and heaven and earth in graceful spirals inward. It is designed to embrace all beings, all energies from all dimensions, all situations. It feeds my soul by grounding the Original Breath of the cosmos into my body.
At the same time, it deepens my appreciation for martial tai chi, medical qigong, and bagua zhang. When I do it immediately after practicing a different form, I feel it captures and crystallizes the post-natal chi from other forms, as this form is even “more internal” than the three classical internal martial art forms.
Most importantly, it helps me to awaken and love my Primordial Self. But you ask, what precisely does “primordial self” refer to?
Taoists describe the Primordial Self as “Zhen Ren”, also translated as the Authentic Self. Primordial Self is the ongoing process whereby the personality (Xin, heart-mind) integrates the primordial chi field (yuan chi, or Original Breath). The key here is process. Authentic Self is not a fixed state of attainment. The personal and the cosmic are a single continuum, always in flux.
Taoists symbolize the Primordial chi field as Tai Yi, the Great Oneness. Tai Yi is not a deity or Supreme God, but rather signifies a chi field of Primordial Love that holds the ground for the unfolding of harmony and balance in manifest creation. So when you integrate the local self with this cosmic ground of love, you embrace your deepest self. That’s why I call it Primordial Self-Love. You literally love the vast primordial cosmos, whose essence is stored within your tiny human body.
Tai Chi for Enlightened Love is basically a shortcut path to experiencing a primordial level of love, which I call Pure Love. Most people are familiar with Conditional Love and Unconditional Love. In my understanding of the Taoist alchemical view, conditional love is what gets rightfully expressed as harmony-in-action in the physical plane (called Later Heaven).
Unconditional love originates in the formless energy plane (called Early Heaven) that shapes our soul pattern. Unconditional Love is basically our soul’s action, in the form of subtle energy downloading into our personality. Our soul expresses its unconditional truth through the lens of our conditioned, embodied personality. The soul is not conditioned by the heavily sexually polarized yin-yang forces held in matter/body, so it can act independent of them, even as it feels obligated to complete its unique soul mission.
The two kinds of love, conditional and un-conditional, are linguistically and energetically a polarity. They mirror and complement each other. Neither exists without the other, meaning neither is superior to the other, and the wisdom of both are needed.
The soul has no choice but to unconditionally love the personality it has birthed. Unconditional Love guides us in completing our spiritual destiny, and keeps the physical plane balanced and flowing in harmony. That’s why unconditional parent-love for children is so critical to stabilizing this plane. If every child received this kind of love, our world would be at total peace.
Doing Tai Chi for Enlightened Love atop Glastonbury Tor, UK at Fall Equinox. Intensely powerful!
All Unconditional Love converts itself into Conditional Love that is exactly appropriate to the personality in each moment. Without this conversion, you get people sincerely claiming to love everyone unconditionally, but they behave quite differently. That just means they have a split between their soul and their personality – the single most common human challenge, in my experience as a spiritual teacher for 30 years.
What is Pure Love, from a human point of view? Pure Love is a quality of Primordial Heaven. It is the primordial ground that makes possible both Conditional and Unconditional Love. Pure Love is totally action-less. It doesn’t need to act, because its Presence is already everywhere, and affects everything anyway. It’s the invisible lubricant of all creation.
When Pure Love becomes conscious in a human being, it grows more powerfuly Present in the physical plane, which Taoists consider the slowest vibrating heaven. The ultimate Taoist wu wei (lit. “without action”) meditative practice is allowing Pure Love to be spontaneously Present in one’s personality. That makes you a Sage. But unlike Unconditional Love, Pure Love doesn’t convert into the action of Conditional Love. It simply vibrates the truth of love, and thus supports the essence of everyone and everything to self-realize its own jing, or essential nature.
Humans have the special ability to align and unite the love from all three heavens – Later, Early, and Primordial Heaven. That ability explains why humans are considered to be fundamental to the Taoist trinity: Heaven, Earth, and Humanity. We humans personalize love in a way that Heaven and Earth cannot.
So why can’t humans just naturally allow Pure Love into their life, without learning a Tai Chi form, however magical? It’s because most personalities are not grounded enough to hold the higher love vibration stable in their body. The chi flowing through their organs and meridians is too polarized, and are carrying a lot of ancestral and karmic resistance (who are really just aspects of us most eager to be loved!).
Wu Ji Gong, Tai Chi for Enlightened Love, stabilizes our inner ground, and allows us to hold the next level of love that we are ready for. This practice is thus a shortcut to way to alchemically speed up one’s evolution, both health-wise (= result of loving one’s body) and spiritually (= loving one’s soul and the entire cosmos). Just read the testimonials on the website (http://www.taichi-enlightenment.com), they are too fantastic to be made up!
Spiritually, I’ve found steady practice of Tai Chi for Enlightened Love, combined with practice of Inner Smile and Taoist inner alchemy, is the most direct way to align these three heavens. But even if one does not have the discipline to practice internal alchemy sitting meditation, the movement ritual IS an alchemical meditation in itself. You will gradually achieve a similar result if your intention is clear. The inner alchemy meditations just allow for more clear and concentrated intent to shape the cosmic chi field in alignment with one’s destiny.
The ritual form is structured to let primordial Pure Love flow through all three dantians (core energy centers) if our intention is open when we do the ceremony. You don’t need to be a master meditator to get the effects – just lie down for 10 minutes after doing the form and it happens spontaneously as your unconscious re-organizes itself. Do this for 100 days in a row. Gradually you begin to crystallize the Pearl of Pure Love, which is none other than your inner sage, or authentic Primordial Self. —————————————–

11-11-11 and 11-12-11 Cosmic Events
It’s the next date, November 11, 2011 that has generated the most public interest. There are dozens of 11-11-11 events planned around the globe. The Number has captured the New Age public’s imagination. This is a purely numerological celebration. . But in my experience, Numbers are the hidden patterns underlying cosmic cycles. I have a whole chapter on the numerology embedded in the Tai Chi for Enlightened Love form. When masses of people invest their chi in something on a particular date, it becomes more powerful. It’s a ritual way for people to ground the dramatic energy shifts happening on the planet that are related to this numerology. I personally have noticed just in the past week some dramatic planetary chi field shifts – they are REAL. But not always easy to manage, unless you are deep in the flow with your true self. What is the hidden meaning of 11-11-11? One is about original unity. Eleven 11 or 1:1 is about the mirroring of the Oneness within Form. So if you meditate at 11am and 11pm on that day, you will activate the five-fold power of 11:11:11:11:11. Watch out, you may find yourself dissolving into the primordial mists of One-ness! Try it as an alchemical experiment. Numbers are just about alchemical resonance, as the Numbers cause you to vibrate with certain cosmic cycle frequencies. Let me know what happens, I will publish the most interesting sharings. The next day, 11-12-11, is another powerful day, numerologically, in its own way even more powerful. It’s no accident that I scheduled a Primordial Qigong/Tai Chi for Enlightened Love workshop on that day. 11:12 is about Oneness in creative tension with the cyles of time, Twelve-ness. The workshop is about the creative tension between the Oneness/Original Self/Source and the 12-fold cycles of Time/Space embedded in our clocks, our astrology, our moon cycles, etc. 12 is a major part of the form, as you gather the chi from the 12 Earthly Branches of the Chinese calendar. Oneness + more Oneness = Oneness multiplied. Got the New Math?
