…interlocked repulsive souls…
Sorry, but it’s this component in the lyrics; what might it mean?

The mirror was used as a ‘shew-stone’ – one of many polished and lustrous things used by Dee to carry out his occult research into the world of spirits. Dee worked with the medium and convicted criminal, Edward Kelley, to summon visions of angels into the mirror’s reflective surface. The two men held séances in England and on the Continent between 1583 and 1589.
The mirror, made of obsidian (volcanic glass), was brought from Mexico to Europe between 1527 and 1530 after Hernando Cortés’s conquest of the region. Mirrors were used by Aztec priests to conjure visions and make prophesies. They were connected with Tezcatlipoca, god of obsidian and sorcery, whose name can be translated from the Nahuatl language as ‘Smoking Mirror’.

If in fact Dee’s courier was William Shakespeare, this connection to John Dee and Edward Kelley and their intersecting magical and alchemical circles can help us answer two of the most vexing question in Shakespearian scholarship: first, why is it so difficult to find references to the Bard in his own time? And second, how and why does the work of someone who is all but invisible through 1593 become associated with the plays that for more than two decades dominate Elizabethan and Jacobean drama, and become the most-read and most-performed plays in the English language?

And those words are always in English. Strange!’ In 1978 when Rautavaara was commissioned to write a double-bass concerto, he was flying back from the States in the evening and saw from his aeroplane window a huge cloud with the rays of the sun coming through it. ‘The words “Angel of Dusk” just came into my mind. And they kept repeating, over and over, like a mantra, with a real energy radiating from the words. Until the energy turned into music…’

Einojuhani Rautavaara (Finnish pronunciation: [ˈei̯nojuɦɑni ˈrɑu̯tɑʋɑːrɑ] (About this soundlisten); 9 October 1928 – 27 July 2016) was a Finnish composer of classical music. He is among the most notable Finnish composers since Jean Sibelius (1865–1957).

Its bright reflective power and its paradoxical ability to allow its user to gaze into ‘other’ worlds but not to pass through them, endowed the obsidian mirror with strong associations with a fiery hearth, the sun, the human eye, a cave (long seen as an entrance to the underworld), and with the surface of still water. In this context, at least one Aztec chronicler symbolically refers to both mythical place of Aztec origin (Aztlan) and Mexica capital city (Tenochtitlan) in terms of ‘the great water mirror that surrounds the great city’.
