Alan Watts Teaches Meditation (1992)
A person who thinks all the time has nothing to think about except thoughts. So he loses touch with reality, and lives in a world of illusion.A person who thinks all the time has nothing to think about except thoughts. So he loses touch with reality, and lives in a world of illusion.
The transformation of human consciousness through meditation is frustrated, as long as we think of it in terms as something that I, my self can bring about. because it leads to endless games of spiritual oneupmanship, and Guru competitions.
[Successful meditation brings about realizations:] That we are no longer this poor little stranger and afraid in a world it never made. But that you are this universe and you are creating it in every moment… Because you see it starts now, it didn’t begin in the past, there was no past. See, if the universe began in the past when that happened it was now; see, but it’s still now — and the universe is still beginning now, and it’s trailing off like the wake of a ship from now, and that wake fades out so does the past.
You can look back there to explain things, but the explanation disappears. You’ll never find it there. … Things are not explained by the past, they are explained by what Happens Now. That Creates the past, and it begins here… That’s the birth of responsibility.
On deep meditation and enlightenment that transcends temporal experiences and most notions of selfhoodyIf you know that “I”, in the sense of the person, the front, the ego, it really doesn’t exist. Then…it won’t go to your head too badly, if you wake up and discover that you’re God.
November 13, 2017 at 5:04 pm #51423rideforeverParticipantWhy do we feel “I” if there is no “I” ?
Did God make a mistake ?
Did the universe screw up ?
Is it really down to a little monkey to tell God that he messed up and and don’t worry me and my chimpanzee freinds am so competent I will fix things for you ?
Is this chmpanzee really competent, or is that more of his brand of derangement ?And all these old spiritual ideas about the ego, do they actually work ?
Or do 99% of seekers actually completely fail then to realize, end up telling themselves oh well if I didn’t find it then …. I must be God then ?Alan Watts was a beautiful speaker, but was he immortal or just a beautiful speaker ?
Does he still exist or is he as dead as a dodo ?The “I” is indeed a real individualised identity because the universe is trying to evolve, and the next stage of evolution is that parts of the universe wake up, they have their own view that is independent, they have their own identity.
That is the purpose of the human “I” ego in the first place, it is not a mistake or something to kill.
The universe that is running things did not make a mistake. However there is indeed a grave problem with this “I” ego.
Firstly it has just been developed and does not function very well, in particular it is too externally focussed fighting the outside world and has lost connection to the inner.
Secondly the “I” has to be completed because it is up to the “I” itself to complete the job.
The universe has done its best to make humans conscious, but it can only go so far, because to be conscious YOU have to do it – that is what conscious means.
Consciousness can not be made mechanically by the universe.
YOU have to wake up – that is consciousness.
So you have to participate and finish the job.
And if you don’t finish the job it is like the acorns of an oak tree.
How many become an Oak, and how many worm food ?It is of immense value for a human being to feel Oneness with everything.
But if he does not then awaken his Real I, he will simply die like a falling leaf.
When you feel Oneness, who inside you is feeling it ?
Check.
Are you dead, or is a deeper you there ?
Feel that deeper “I” that is capable of feeling Oneness, and make that your identity.
Make that solid.
Embody that.If we were God why are we idiots ?
And why did spiritual teachers do any teaching ?
If fact the great teachers said something big has to change.Jesus says :
Wide is the gate and broad the road that leads to destruction and many find it.
Narrow is the gate and straight the road that leads to life and few find it.“You Are God”
And there are human baboons everywhere who think they are Beyonce as well.
Some think they are the Queen of Sheba, or even Obama.
But look at what the baboons do with their planet, and understand who you are listening to.My understanding is quite simple :
1. When following a path, go to the source and forget every other idiot follower
2. All paths work, but you have to follow it 100%, you have to be willing to do that or you will not make it
3. Only exceptional efforts countThe prize is quite large, you become an Objective being living in permanence outside space and time.
Big things require big … spirit. You gotta believe and you gotta strive and you gotta have balls and work like a mofo.
Or you didn’t want to live enough.
Are you worthy of the great prize, or did you spend your life staring at Beyonce’s ass.November 13, 2017 at 7:52 pm #51425rideforeverParticipantAlan Watts wasn’t realised. Here are some other quotes :
“If you’re going to say “I am god,” you must allow it for everyone else too.”
“In a way that’s what happened to Jesus, because he wasn’t sophisticated theologically. He only had old testament biblical theology behind him. If he had Hindu theology, he could have put it more subtly. But it was only the rather primitive theology of the old testament. And that was the conception of god as a monarchical boss. And you can’t go around saying that I’m the boss’s son.”
Watts was a theologian, in other words he was mental, he was looking for the best opinion. That’s what he thought the job was, to find an “opinion” !
All his work took place within the falseness of the mind.
He never planted one step outside of it.He did not take seriously that you must actually die.
Such is the fate of most who study, the books are their tomb.In Ribhu Gita it says that the awakened state is very rare even for those who are sadhus.
It is strange that a man can spend his entire life studying the words of Jesus and Buddha and never take seriously what they say. It is quite pathetic and cowardly.
There are very few spiritual people on the planet, everyone else thinks it’s all a great fun game.
As Jesus says, in the end there is just the gnashing of teeth and then death.
