As if I didn’t already like China enough
for its rich history and development of qigong,
I just learned today that if you want to say
“America” in Mandarin Chinese, you say “Beautiful kingdom”.
It is like they are giving America an accolade, just by saying “America”.Nice.

The first great experience deserves more detailed description. I was lying in the corridor of a medical center and had horrible head ache and high temperature. Then something happened. I felt myself totally calm and peaceful. It was something unbelievable. All my life I had been anxious about all possible things. And now I felt completely happy and relaxed. I felt the pain still but some it was somehow external to me. I just enjoyed looking the parallel streams of pictures, like cartoons, flowing in front of my eyes. I really saw my thoughts! The surrealistic and erotic pictures, much like those in paintings of Dali, Bosch and Brueghel, were dancing in the rhytm of the silent music I heard from loud speaker. There was also a feeling of understanding. I understood everything although I could not tell what it is!

Hi,
Actually 美国 Beautiful Kingdom is the shortened version.
The full name is 美利堅 (beautiful: gain/profit: hard/firm)
and is pronounced to sound like mei-ri-ka.The characters are mainly chosen for their pronunciation
and not so much for meaning. Japan uses the older versions
and I remember being initially surprised by France: 仏国
which translates as Buddhist Kingdom…..what….aren’t
the French catholics????
Anyway has nothing to do with the Buddha, they needed a
FU sound for France. The Chinese call France 法国 or Law
Kingdom.Germany in the new characters is called 徳国 Virtuous
Kingdom (same character used in Tao Te Ching) but the older
one (that Japan still uses) is 独国 meaning Alone Kingdom.The nature of the usage of characters is so wide, sometimes used
for sound alone, sometimes for meaning, and sometimes the meaning
is so important that a pronunciation is created for a character and
used only in a single context.Coca Cola 可口可楽 or good oral fun!!!!

The names for countries who use characters do have
meaning:China 中国 in the center of the world
and
Japan 日本国 where the sun originates in the East
