The syllable is also referred to as omkara (ओंकार oṃkāra) or aumkara (औंकार auṃkāra), literally “om syllable”, and in Sanskrit it is sometimes referred to as praṇava, literally “that which is sounded out loudly”.
-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OmIf one has enough time I think it’s useful to become familiar with also those mechanical Indian breathing practices (alternate nostril breathing, ujjayi pranayama, advanced breath retention etc.) which one can easily find for example from Bihar School of Yoga books (Asana Pranayama Mudra Bandha & Prana Pranyama Prana Vidya).
There information is good enough, in my opinion, but I have impression that Swami Satyananda Saraswati actually tried to teach too many thing which he hadn’t really mastered. But of course Sivananda seem to have been even worse in this respect.
Benefits really seem to be manifold.
But my personal opinion is that safest way to start are voice methods and then avoiding need to wait too long (first asana and then pranayama) if one is not already an athlete.

-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UndineOndine’s curse, is most commonly used to refer to congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS) or primary alveolar hypoventilation. CCHS is a respiratory disorder that is fatal if untreated. People afflicted with Ondine’s curse classically suffer from respiratory arrest during sleep.
-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ondine’s_curseBiofeedback is the process of gaining greater awareness of many physiological functions primarily using instruments that provide information on the activity of those same systems, with a goal of being able to manipulate them at will. Some of the processes that can be controlled include brainwaves, muscle tone, skin conductance, heart rate and pain perception.
-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BiofeedbackFulfillment meditation includes “higher” techniques of meditation, which result in understanding of ultimate truth. But since relative and ultimate truth are two sides of the same coin, creative and fulfillment stages both lead to the same goal. Fundamentally, fulfillment meditation techniques entail the perception of emptiness in form, or the dissolution of form into emptiness: the dissolution of the creative stage vision into emptiness is technically a fulfillment stage practice. Examples of fulfillment mode yogas are dream yoga, the yoga of the mystic heat, Mahamudra meditation, the yoga of the apparitional body, the yoga of resurrection, clear light meditation, and the yoga of uniting skillful means [upaya] and perfect insight [prajna] to create the seed-essence of pure pleasure.
-KEITH DOWMAN, Introduction to Masters of MahamudraSorry for my broken English.
Technically retention after inhalation is referred antar kumbhaka and after exhalation it’s called bahir kumbhaka. Spontaneous (but not terminal) one is called kevala kumbhaka.
I would say that breathing exercises really can be dangerous.
I for example know older Russian guy who has higher university degree from biology though he actually came to Finland because of some nasty bankruptcy and also at least his business companions had seemingly very serious problems with local Russian gangsters.
When he had been during the Soviet times a university student, in then Leningrad State University, he had had friend who had experimented with yoga practice and also kumbhaka.
Because of their status as biology students they had had available some instruments with which they could get biofeedback from the various bodily systems.
So his friend after intensive experiments died because of cardiac arrest and the only explanation could be his yoga pursuits because he had been otherwise totally healthy young man.
In my opinion one should be very disciplined with more advanced practices.
It means that breathing practices are necessary for cherubic, seraphic or at least angelic mortals who are intenting to become demonic immortals.

Friends of a fitness model and actor who was hit by a train and killed while making a video said that he was a bold and fearless person who just made a rare mistake.
“It was just a freaky moment where something got out of control,” said Warren Coulter, who had been friends for 15 years with 37-year-old George Gregory Plitt Jr., who went by “Greg.”
Plitt, among the more recognizable faces and physiques in the fitness industry, was shooting a video for his website with two crew members when the Metrolink commuter train hit him Saturday afternoon in Burbank, authorities and friends said.
Coulter told The Associated Press that Plitt was a West Point graduate and Army Ranger who had jumped out of planes more than 1,000 times in his life and had a taste for the extreme, but also treated everyone and everything with respect and care as befitted his military past.
-http://www.cbsnews.com/news/greg-plitt-more-details-surface-about-death/Brawl, a large-scale fist fight usually involving multiple participants.
-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BrawlDr. Vranich, the breathing coach, believes teaching people to unlearn dysfunctional breathing habits requires practice and exercises. Her group classes cost $150 for a three-hour workshop and private classes range from $350 to $450.
-http://www.wsj.com/articles/breathing-for-your-better-health-1422311283These two things would seem to be very critical things to consider and discipline if one intends to experiment with breathing practices more seriously.
I would even say that it’s better to become quite total loner as long inferior type of company can have any kind of harmful influence.
For somebody with martial skills of course any situation can be possibility.
Sorry for my broken English.
