I just lost track of all my thoughts, its all your fault.
To me, the yin resting phase of alchemy is still dynamic, and doesn’t have anything to do with following the breath or letting go of thoughts. It’s about experiencing the qualities of energy that are in process, being more “deeply in process”. This also implies that there is an awareness that is aware of that experience, and is more deeply embodied.
********************
Lets see if I can follow you. There is an awareness that is not a thought or thoughts, that chooses to focus on these thoughts or experiences to be more “deeply in process”, that this helps or is beneficial to this “awareness”?
Is there a name for this “awareness” in taoist alchemical language?
thanks,

Zhen Ren = spiritual integration of your authentic self
>>”There is an awareness that is not a thought or thoughts, that chooses to focus on these thoughts or experiences to be more “deeply in process”, that this helps or is beneficial to this “awareness”?
My impression would be not to separate out the thoughts and the “awareness”, the five shen are the consciousness & sensing function of our body-mind, and when we integrate in higher levels of the whole, that consciousness / awareness simply expands to encompass more impersonal aspects of the consciousness of the whole of nature. Because we become more aware of it when we integrate it into our five shen, it is not separate from us or nature, yet our body-mind may not necessarily have access to all of it without an intention to integrate with it.
In lay terms, a meditator would have higher awareness of their natural surroundings and emotional acuity than someone that watches TV all day.

March 25, 2010 at 12:32 am #33581singing oceanParticipantBefore answering, I will give a brief description of each:
Zhen Ren – spiritual integration of the authentic self. “Authentic” refers to the integration of the pure virtue qualities of the five shen. The more pure the five shen are, the more yuan qi they include, but if they have too much yuan qi then they become only neutral, formless and undifferentiated, so have to remain somewhat specific to the physical plane. Important point – it is a process of communication, I cannot stress this enough. We are born with a connection to the whole of nature but may not have skill in communicating with all of it, which is where the process of integration comes in through meditation and alchemy.
Yuan shen – a formless and undifferentiated aspect of nature that is pure potential shen, existing in pure form in the wuji, and to varying degrees in Hundun (formless chaos), Xian Tian (early heaven) and Hou Tian (later heaven – physical plane).
How is Zhen Ren different that Yuan Shen?
Yuan Shen is a formless, undifferentiated process of nature, and therefore very collective and primal, while Zhen Ren is the process of a human that is of necessity, filtered through the five shen (it is part of the process of refinement of the five shen). The human always has a connection with all levels of nature, but may not be adept at communicating with them. Through the process of meditation or inner alchemy, the human uses his/her body mind (the five shen) to communicate with more collective aspects of nature that also necessarily contain more yuan shen.
Zhen ren represents a human that senses through the five shen yet is able to communicate with the formless, undifferentiated processes of nature. The human physical and energy body is mainly made up of yin & yang jing, qi and shen. If a human were pure yuan shen, they could not exist in the physical plane, so must contain some polarization. Zhen ren represents the process that a human goes through as they gain skill in communicating with more neutral process of nature yet are able to integrate communication with those processes through the five shen. This expands both the awareness of the five shen and the awareness of nature through better communication between the different frequencies.

March 27, 2010 at 11:09 pm #33587StevenModeratorTo be honest, I’d probably say that only 5% of the temple
population is Korean. The temple priest and senior
seminary students are all *not* of Korean descent, although
the temple is a branch temple of five that was started by
a Korean Zen master and who trained the temple priest.March 27, 2010 at 11:57 pm #33589StevenModeratorExcellent post, Chris.
Probably one of the best you’ve given so far,
and I resonate strongly with it as well. What you are ultimately talking about is
having the xin evolve to its highest
achievable level given what is possible
with the highest pure virtue qualities of
the shen and their idealized integration as
cohesive team.It is about making more and more of the
“unconscious” conscious and being an
expert craftsman in using all of your
internal spiritual tools to your advantage
in spiritual exploration, rather than allowing
them to cloud your ability to see and communicate
with the deepest levels of reality.S

you are right in Chris’s neck-of-the-woods.

I don’t think these are only for martial arts enthusiasts per se.
I am myself interested about Parkour (art of displacement) or Freerunning type of approach to start with.
These guys in the video or belonging to this practice group are propably very much over the average in athletic/acrobatic sense. Adults who would, for a reason or an other, like to learn things like this, would need to have much preparation with streching, maybe hatha yoga etc.
Dog mentioned Bud Malmstrom, who has so special CV. So he has been also Navy SEAL wilderness survival trainer, OSI tactical tracker (for fugitive retrieval) and so on.
To become skilled in all these acrobatic and outdoor feats and still also be able to manage with basic office skills is a task for real ninja.

March 29, 2010 at 5:48 pm #33597baguaParticipantThanks. I am home now. I mentioned it in the post in case you wanted to meet, but missed each other. My sponsors invited me to come back so I will be returning, maybe we can get together then.
I did see the awesome metaphysical bookstore in Vancouver, and ate at a great vegetarian restaurant. Beautiful city, friendly people, definitely a city for non-Canadians to visit. I did visit with Minke and David, wonderful to finally meet them in person.
