Could you please say a bit about the difference between fate and destiny. Is it as simple as we have a personal, later heaven fate related to which shen come in as we incarnate? And that we all have a destiny which is to balance early and later heaven? What controls fate and what controls destiny, and how does it relate to personality?

I understand destiny to be the shape of one’s soul pattern, essentially astrological, setting the parameters of what that soul needs to complete.
Of course, there is free will in HOW one chooses to complete one’s destiny – that is an unknown. The imprint of the jing with the soul patterns is basically an open request: Hunt for this kind of experience, and digest it for the Whole.
Fate I take as a more general term, describing the overall patterns/cycles governing a time period/culture, to which all personal destinies must adjust as part of the playing field. These larger forces are very difficult to change. Advanced adepts may be able to change how they interact with the laarger forces of Fate, but that is not quite the same as changing them.
does this answer your question?

That sounds a little different than I remember – but, then again, I am asking because my memory is unclear….
You had talked about Ming and Xing, and I had thought they related to different levels of the purpose to our lives.
Your answer above is helpful. but, if you ahve anything to add about ming and xing, that would be great.

Since you didn’t use those terms in the question, I didn’t use them in the answer. That would have made for a clearer question.
But fate and destiny are not good translations of xing and ming.
Ming is well translated as worldly destiny, but fate is not xing.
Xing is more like spiritual essence, your spiritual destiny in other planes, where you will cultivate yourself to.
