To all those new world Taoists out there, Ken Wilber’s Integral Spiritual Experience will be happening one month a year for the next five years. The organizers of this event are trying to have a representative from each spiritual tradition come and share their lineage with other all the other major spiritual traditions of the world. So far they have all the major ones represented except, of course, Taoism. What they are looking for is an established Taoist teacher, preferably a lineage holder, that is also versed in the Integral philosophy. They want to have a mass meeting of spiritual leaders brought together with an understanding of the Integral framework so they can all commincate in a kind of universal language. The hope is that each tradition will maintain it’s uniquness while also having a free flow of ideas and an exchange of techniques in hopes of Integrating these traditions and creating an open dialogue which will hopefully move the world further along in it’s spiritual evolution. Ken Wilber compares it to International Cooking. You don’t want to throw lo main in with tacos, and and lasagna, and mash it all together and cook it into a grey mush, but you do want to have the dishes compliment each other, so that the unique flavor of each can be fully appreciated.
Anyway I know this is a tall order, but if anyone knows such a person, or if there is an already established teacher that is willing to learn the Integral framework in order to represent Taoism in this Integral Spiritual Experience, then contact me. Though I am not an organizer for the event I have been in dialogue with them and they asked me if I new anyone up to the challenge, and that if I found someone then to help them get in contact with them. So here I am putting the word out. I think that this is a great chance for Taoism to really give true spiritual seekers a glimpse of it’s beauty and complexity. A place where very receptive minds, and hearts will be open to it’s unique path.
When I first contacted the organizers about whether Taoism would be represented at the ISE they said “no, but there will be lots of Buddhist Teachers.” I think Taoism has been seen as some sort of off shoot of Buddhism, and not that Zen, and Chan are off shoots of Taoism. I think that this event would give us a chance to show that Taoism is its own system totally different than all other esoteric transformative practices, it’s just misunderstood.
So if anyone is interested just contact me here and I will contact the organizers, and give you their contacts as well. Looking forward to hearing from everyone.

My hope is that in the future writing and verbal language no longer exist. It is a technology that really separates us, not increasing our intimacy. But this is a ways off.

It sounds like alot of fun, and really every major tradition has been represented except Taoism. There will be people like Lama Surya Das, Zen Master Genpo Roshi, Sally Kempton (long time devotee of Swami Muktananda), Father Thomas Keating(one the first people in the Catholic Church in several hundred years to use and teach secret Trapist contemplative prayer techniques that work like meditation), David Deida, Taleg Rinpoche, Deepak Chopra, and many more. Though I have never personally been to an Integral event I do have several close friends who have been , and all of them said that they are life changing events. The Integral movement is usually very organized and is also well funded, so they can afford to pull out all the stops. Now I know money isn’t everything but I do know from experience that a poorly funded retreat often sucks. It is usually uncomfortable and rarely runs the way it is supposed to. I know that the Integral Spiritual Center has been working on this event for several years so I sure there will be little confusion. Like I said before I hope Taoism can be propperly represented at this event as I really think that what happens in the next 5 years at these events will help guide the next big spiritual growth spirt that the world is about to go threw. I sincerely hope that Taoism will be in the ranks of this movement.

February 1, 2009 at 1:15 pm #30402StevenModeratorHi Shenchi,
I seem to remember (from being on the list for a few years),
that a couple years back, Michael Winn had some posts about Ken Wilber.
He seemed to be familiar with his material, and seemed quite
interested in it at the time (at least as a side interest).Have you asked Michael?
Michael may be busy, or no longer interested, but it seems like
it wouldn’t hurt to ask.S

I have been considering opening an Integral Taoism site for some time, mostly to get those very smart folks more deeply into their bodies. I have a lot of friends involved with Wilber who have been pushing me to do this.
I’m familiar with Ken’s basic ideas, and admire his bold inclusiveness. Alan Combs (co-developer with Wilber of a model matrix) was a student of mine. I’m familiar with the weakness in their model, mostly having to do with static states vs. dynamic continuum process and failing to grasp that the ninth center of the eight quadrants is also dynamic. But that has already been pointed out to them by some of their own followers…..

I have tried to get things rolling lets hope that it works out. I think Michael would be a great representative for Taoism at these Integral Spiritual Experience events. I am sure the great Tao will select the best person for the job.Shenchi
