Many spiritual traditions hold that there is a division between different parts of Human consciousness, and that if they are not integrated, the individual will be dissolved back into the “ONE”.
This subject is at the core of ongoing discussions on this forum…
I have compiled below different qualities associated with each from a book referenced by Michael in some of the courses, written by Peter Novak called “The Lost Secret of Death”. It is written with the connection between those terms and Daoist terminology used by Michael Winn in the Healing Dao, as well as listing cultures from around the world that include this cosmology of the “Binary Soul Doctrine”:
Ka (five jing shen, xin – heart mind):
Unconscious soul
memories
subjective individual self
moral self with conscience
emotional qualities
form
mortal
Ba (original self – thread of oversoul in physical form)
Conscious spirit
free will
awareness
intelligence
ability to move and communicate
objective
collective
immortal
formless
Akh (Zi Ren – authentic integrated self)
All of the above and more
Cultures supporting this theory/experience in various ways:
China
Ancient Egypt
Incan/Toltec
Greece
India
Hawaii
Persia
Early Judaic
Early Christian
Islam
Voudoun
Angola
Siberia
Saami (finland/norway)
Australian aborigine
Inuit
Dakota
Amazonian (various)
pre-buddhist “pli” culture
good work, chris.
but for Taoist readers, the top list might be described as the Earth aspect, and include the po and zhi,
and the second list the heaven aspect, and include the hun and heart shen.
I have an article coming out in next Journal of Daoist Studies on Daoist methods of dissolving the heart mind….

OK, good to know…I wasn’t sure of exactly how the different systems correspond.
and where does the Yi, earth spirit come in?
It would make sense that it would be the Earth aspect, since
it is *Earth* after all; however, it seems like it could also
go to heaven, since heaven wants a piece of Earth
or does it not fit into either and just mediate in a third space?
