Hello all,
After the Winter Solstice, I started the Healing Tao system.
Currently I have been practicing the Deep Healing Qigong and Qigong Fundamentals 1.I find the 5 Animals/Six Healing Sounds to be very detoxifying, and the Deep Healing Qigong is extremely powerful for me in numerous ways.
I feel happier, healthier, more at peace, more stable emotionally, and feel energetically at a higher place than ever before. I really feel different, but a better kind of different.
I have developed a “problem” though, that I’d like some advice on.
Whenever I encounter angry people (not necessarily angry at me, just people who are angry in my vicinity), I can feel their anger infecting me like a sickness. Afterward, I feel downright ill. I really feel sick–physically, emotionally, etc.
For the rest of the day, I feel “poisoned”, and don’t feel good again until I’ve gone home and done some qigong to clear it out. Before I started the system, I never had this happen to me, but now it happens upon any such exposure (of course, this is the only minus–I love feeling the way I do from qigong). It’s almost as if the “lack of toxins” from clearing out, causes me to absorb them back easily like a magnet.
My question is:
1. Has anyone else also experienced this phenomenon?
2. How have you dealt with it? Are there techniques (perhaps later on in the system) that one can use to block this “negative energy poisoning”?–maybe some sort of insulating technique? All responses greatfully welcomed and valued!
With love to you all,
StevenFebruary 24, 2007 at 12:17 am #21307DogParticipantThere are practices later on that can give you more control and less bottons to push, try the fusion classes. Do not forget to ask your shen, and guides for there help and wisdom on this topic. The virtues of the lung shen might help alot in this case. I have found anger to be apart of the processes. I can totally related. As we become open to the positive energy of outside forces, we also become open to the negative energies as well.
There are several solutions to this.
1) When possible, shift away from negative people. This can be a difficult thing. I broke with several long-term friends when I came to realize that behind their smile was a fulminating cauldron of poison that was there for an even longer-term.
2) Add some yang practices to your qi gong. I get the sense that you are taking a fairly yin, receptive, approach to things. You can counter the chi coming to you from them with various simple things: oils, amulets, crystals, mantras, mudras. If these things are applied with the intent of strength, and not with the worry of fear, they can act as a touch-stone to keep you strong when you are around them.
3) Resonate more deeply with your deep self. Smile to your organs, and feel them smiling back. There are deeper levels of reality that occurs in those “poisonous” situations. As your practices deepen, as you move on to the Fusion and the Kan and Li practices, external events will have less and less influence on you. When you get to this point, you can then safely explore the “negative” energies coming at you (or that you simply resonate with), decode them, and find firm ground within.
best of luck,

It shows great cou-rage to change long standing patterns.

When I read your post the first thing that came to my mind was something I learned from my teacher in the context of learning about Chi healing.
The question was asked “What type of practice do you need to do in order to protect yourself from negative influence when you are working on people.”His answer was “nothing”. “If you are thinking this way your spirit is already gone.”
Perhaps this can apply in your situation. You are perceiving peoples negative energy as “poisoning” you. Maybe a perspective shift is on order? Perhaps what you are perceiving is there, and always was there but you are only now noticing the energy dynamics, the the energy exchange which is part of all we do. All communication is an exchange of energy.
I believe the Fusion practice will help also. For now I suggest along the same lines as voice. Work on standing practice and strengthening the body. Also work on strengthening your center, connection with the Tantien. MWinn’s practice of Ocean breathing can be a profound exploration of your energy body. Expanding and contracting from the tantien can teach you more about your energetic boundaries. Perhaps such an exercise could be helpful to push your energy out and make you feel more impermeable.
Also MWinn’s practice of tossing out the sick chi may be a good quick fix in this situation. When you feel poisoned go somewhere and use your energy fingers to comb out your body and toss out the sick chi. I believe this is on the Chikung fundamentals DVD, or maybe CKF 2.Good luck and with continued practice as you have described you should transcend this dynamic easily.

February 25, 2007 at 12:52 am #21315StevenModeratorThanks to all of you for your insightful advice . . .
@All responders
It is good to hear that some of you have experienced this before, and it is good
to know that some of the later practices, i.e. Fusion, Kan and Li will prove beneficial in this regard. I suppose patience is the key here, as Rome wasn’t built in a day ๐
@Dog
Due to certain past circumstances, the lung shen are still trying to align with the rest of my body; they are still too free-spirited, but its something I’m working on.
Maybe that is part of the problem? At any rate, you’ve touched on something important. As far as changing who I hang around, that has seemed to be one of the easier things that I’ve done–it actually is harder for me to maintain an old unhealthy relationship than it is to let it go. If only the other stuff was as “easy” . . .
Inner smiles to you!
@Chris
Your comment about becoming more open to positive AND negative energy makes a lot of sense. You couldn’t be more right about me taking a yin approach to my qigong!
Part of my problem has always been being too much of a type-A workholic type, and
I’ve relished in the yin as a means of “dialing it back”, trying to destress, take life not so seriously, and to soak up peace. This has probably been the largest reason why I’m calmer, more stable, and content. This strong yin approach has most probably made me extremely receptive as you suggest, which may account for this “magnet” effect I mentioned earlier.
I find your suggestions to be very valuable.Being a complete newbie, I know nothing about amulets, crystals, and the like.
Maybe I’ll have to talk to you about that . . .Peace love and smiles, my friend
@Craig
I think you are right about the perspective issue, except I don’t think that I’m viewing the negative energy that way until it happens. What I mean is, say I go into a bank. Some irate guy is berating the teller, and just going overboard and being ridiculously unkind. I’m not really thinking about the situation. Then I start feeling really sick and unwell–physically, emotionally, spiritually. Then I can feel his negative energy inside me poisoning me, and then I perceive any subsequent negative energy coming my way from the irate guy. What initially initiated the perception, was my unwell feeling, not a prior perception. Prior to that feeling, I wasn’t even thinking about the guy in question, my energy, or anything. Usually I’m thinking about other mundane stuff, like what I’m doing later that day, or what I’m going to do next etc. Then my sickness draws me out of my thoughts, and refocuses them on the cause–which is the person in question. Of course, by then it is kind of too late.
I am going to try some of your suggestions, though. I never thought about the
“Tossing out the Evil Chi”–that’s a good idea! I usually only used it before at the beginning of qigong, but it couldn’t hurt to use it in pinch (semi-privately of course–I’m sure I would get some strange looks if I did that public . . . of course, maybe I shouldn’t worry about the strange looks ๐ )Thanks again–smiles and blessings!

February 26, 2007 at 12:17 pm #21319JernejParticipantit is said that iron shirt training develops sort of insensitivity
it does ward of all
so negative does not get to you
but the positive might also stay out of your way/boundry
so use skillempty force breathing does can develop balls
deep healing is good for release
but left to its own end it is also hiding, working through the shadow
while release in the elements is nice
so is its active part, the sounds that assertsyou do claim insufficience in the yang part of trainning
by being vulnerable to yang emotionsso can you be angry
nobody fucks around with mad people(still being dumbed by nice people staying out of my way
if they are not strong but very bright)February 26, 2007 at 1:47 pm #21321Alexander AlexisParticipantSteven, I am offering these few thoughts to you for your contemplation-
What you wrote back to Craig (who has a clear grasp of the situation in my opinion):
“I think you are right about the perspective issue, except I don’t think that I’m viewing the negative energy that way until it happens.”
Although you cannot yet see it, you actually ARE.
Here:s why…
“What I mean is, say I go into a bank. Some irate guy is berating the teller, and just going overboard and being ridiculously unkind. I’m not really thinking about the situation.”
Those statements are not at all neutral. They are highly judgmental of what you are witnessing. You are therefore in reaction and actually generating the emotions you think are coming from the upset customer. His behavior triggered something in you.
See what you say happens next now…
“Then I start feeling really sick and unwell–physically, emotionally, spiritually. Then I can feel his negative energy inside me poisoning me, and then I perceive any subsequent negative energy coming my way from the irate guy.”
This is because you have created a resonance with him in anger and upset. You projected and then got your own reflection back.
If you can understand this, you can see why this next of yours statement is untrue…
“What initially initiated the perception, was my unwell feeling, not a prior perception. Of course, by then it is kind of too late.”
The feeling of sickness is your body’s warning signal to you that you have changed your thoughts, mostly subconsciously, to negative ones. You weren’t aware consciously of having done it and so your body responded perfectly by reflecting back to you what was going on inside you.
What you have to do to keep from feeling poisoned is keep developing your ability to FEEL what you are doing at deeper levels so that when a judgement forms inside you you see it right away and do not project it onto innocent bystanders. All that can result from that is a cycle of blame and powerlessness which leads one to try to control what one feels or what someone else is doing. Being in touch with the feeling inside will give you clear knowing of what is going on in you. That is your point of power.
This is why Craig’s teacher said, “Do nothing.” Real protection is not protection at all. It is being in alignment with positive energies as they stream from inside you so that that is what you experience and that is what you create from. As soon as you hook into someone else’s drama, you align with them and suffer accordingly. Learning mastery is mostly about unhooking from what your ego likes to argue with or suffer about and residing instead in the equanimity and balance of the center.
Best, Alexander
February 26, 2007 at 7:03 pm #21323StevenModeratorI like an interesting discussion, so don’t take offense
when I want to differ with you somewhat ๐While I think that what you are saying is also somewhat true,
I don’t think that it is the whole picture. My initial comment about what was happening in the “bank teller example” is
really only AFTER the fact. For the most part, when I am out running errands say, I’m usually kind of in my
own mind, and not really observant of my surroundings (this is probably a problem in and of itself). For instance, if someone were to talk to me in this state, I usually respond with “what?”–not because I’m deaf, but because my mind is completely elsewhere–preoccupied with the stuff that I need to do, or what I’m planning on doing. It is the unwell feeling that jars me out of that state, and then I recognize what is causing it–after the fact. Just like if you are in room near a loud TV, the reverberation of sound waves strikes your ears and you hear it, someone who is extremely angry or emotionally unstable is projecting energy also, and you can’t help but to receive it.
It is this reception that causes the initial sickness and awareness of the situation–although I agree that once I’m made aware of it, then my thinking about it probably doesn’t help.
Now I suppose you could argue that SUBCONSCIOUSLY I’m picking up on the negativity, judging it to be negative, and allowing it to affect me in a bad way, but if that’s
what you mean, I don’t really know how anything can be done as I’m not even aware of it. I don’t know how I can deal with something I’m not aware of.Moreover, after the fact, I am probably judging it to be negative, but THAT’S WHAT IT IS! A “pollyanna” approach of just perceiving everything surrounding you to be great is a little unrealistic I think. I think that things like that should be viewed as what they are; I just want it and its energy to remain separate from me as much as possible, sort of how things were before beginning the training.
It’s as if I have turned on a radio that picks up radio stations now, but that several such radio stations I’d like to block–as if the radio were still OFF.
Feel free to argue with me ๐

SteveFebruary 27, 2007 at 7:47 am #21325NnonnthParticipantEveryone here is right. Long-term, Craig and Alexander are completely correct. But it is a slow process. You can use things in the meanwhile. Craig’s teacher was talking to him as someone who was ready to take the next step of being connected to deeper parts of self rather than surroundings and wouldn’t make the mistake of seeing this as just putting on rose-coloured spectacles.
But when not yet at this stage it is a) a very good idea to protect oneself, and b) not a good idea to discourage someone from doing so prematurely, on moral grounds! Until the process has been going a while, a person has not had time to notice what is going on.
My recommendations:
1. Belt channel is very good for protection, that is its function. If you can’t learn about it in HT format yet you can still make use of it by tying a thread around your waist with the intention of protecting yourself from harmful vibes. Or if you wear a belt use that.
2. Keep ears clean. They are always open and lead directly to the kidneys/water, so bad vibes enter in there. Hydrogen Peroxide is good for this, on a q-tip, 3% solution.
3. If you feel low returning home there is obviously qigong. But a salt rub (w/ particular attention to sternum and back of neck), a shower, one minute or two of which is fairly cold (before warming up again), and a change to clean clothing can work absolute wonders.
These are all pretty standard – crude, but easy, and when you get further you can dispense with them. Don’t pay any attention to people who tell you to run before you can walk. Good books on this: ‘Spiritual Cleansing’ (Mickaharic) and ‘Practical Psychic Self-Defence’ (Bruce).
In time you will be able to make the bank guy feel better by your mere presence, so look forward to that one and God Speed! Or Tao Slowness, whatever it is…

February 27, 2007 at 5:41 pm #21329BeginnerParticipantI am glad N spoke up because while I have the capacity to increase my sense of inclusion infinitely -in a moment,as in the bank, when shit happens out of the blue that broad POV becomes the expectation to be an angel. What I mean is sometimes we do get splat on and it really is a training period we are in to be in the world with more sensitivity but less armoring.
I don’t recall if anyone mentioned the Inner Smile. This practice is the most difficult because it is the simplest.I went through the first two Kan and Li practices before I could return and explore this one more thoroughly.
The question I would ask is how can I include this man at the bank in my inner smile? As I start to do that even now it takes me to meeting my own anger with unconditional awareness and honesty, my own splatting and somehow makes the clean up after a triggering event like this much easier and keeps me from creating over protection due to fear.
Within the Inner Smile is the secret to all the later practices, the use of the neutral force, the generation of inner space due to greater inclusion of self and shadow selves and I find it endlessly illuminating and humbling.
Michaels’ CD on it is especially good and clear in the yin and yang practice of it. I recommend it if you don’t have. Bar
February 27, 2007 at 5:51 pm #21331NnonnthParticipant… my point is only that the early stages can be rough and you can use palliatives without becoming a slave to them until you see through the need for them.
Eventually Steven will ‘get it’ – we all will – until we do, it is pointless to preach.
One might as well look at someone eating and say, “Ah! Yes, I know what you’re doing here – you feel hunger so you stuff the materials of other lifeforms into you. What you don’t understand is that there is this thing called bigu. You have to become a breatharian, then this whole need-to-eat thing won’t bother you.” To which one may say: what is the person to do *in the meanwhile*? It is a purely practical question with no philosophical debate required IMnotespeciallyHO.
