I am not sure if any of you have heard of acutone therapy, but I just had a very interesting conversation with the creator of acutone, Dean Loyd. He has developed a system of therapy that uses tuning forks and the sound generated by them instead of acupuncture needles. He created the system by studying Chinese music theory and realized that the ancient Chinese had an advanced music therapy system and that the tones and scales of this system coinsided with the 5 elements in a Chinese version of the pentatonic scale but also that certain tones correlated with the 8 pre & post heaven gua. He believes that Feng Shui and music went hand and hand, and that certain rooms were made to resonate a paticular tone. So that when the corresponding tone was played in that room it would have a theraputic effect on those in that room.
I was very interested in what he had to say about the 8 pre and post heaven gua and how they correlate to the tones, and also how they work on the 8 extraordinary vessels. According to him major and minor tones correlate to the yin and yang aspects of the vessles. Thus playing the appropriate tone on the correct master and couple points could create a theraputic resonance within that vessle. This really starts to interest me in reference to my Ba Gua Zhang practice. He seemed to beleive that the post heaven tones worked for Feng Shui and for cleansing spaces, and the pre heaven tones worked theraputicaly on the body. I wonder if you could create hexagramal tones using both together, or if by creating an energy internally and projecting it through the tuning fork if that might create a hexagramal energy, one pre heaven (energy) one post heaven(resonating tone) creating the hexagram.
Either way I am planning on getting the tuning forks soon and the charts to go along with it. I have a feeling with my ear and my understanding of TCM I should pick it up rather quickly. I will keep you posted as to how the tuning forks work in both healing and in my Ba Gua practice. Until then.

This was my theory and I also heard a Sarod master explain music in a very similar way, so this is understood in other traditions. But Bagua said I was dead wrong. The basic frame of the house is the rythem and chord progression or tone then everything else is playing on top of this. It mirrors our own musical body. I often us music to explain allot of concepts, if I remember correctly Buddha was finally enlightened when he heard a musician explaining to his student if you tighten a string to much it will brake but if you loosen it to much it will not play. This same sarod player also enforced my belief about the similarities between teaching music and Alchemy. The Sarod player said today there is to much imitation in music not enough emulation. Can you hear the music, are you truly listening? Are you a Jazz player or a Classical musician playing from memory all up in the head? My musical instrument is my body can I make my instrument my heart, and then surrender it to god. Carlos Santana said that what he enjoys about music is “giving and receiving spiritual orgasms”. I also find it interesting that both musicians and alchemist both talk about finding there voice.February 16, 2009 at 4:38 pm #30572StevenModeratorI remember that Matt Wiszniewski, the guy at the Healing Tao
retreats that came from Poland and had an interest in Hawaiian Huna,
did some kind of healing work with tuning forks. I don’t
know if it was the same system as what you are talking about, but
it very well could be. Of course, if it is the same system, and
you were talking with the creator of it, then I guess I’m not
really adding anything . . . but just in case you wanted another
resource. I believe Michael probably has his contact info, if you
can’t find it online. . . SFebruary 16, 2009 at 7:54 pm #30574shenchiParticipantThanks Steven. I kinda just contacted the guy wanting to know more about how it works with the 8 vessles and with the 8 gua, since this stuff isn’t in his book but I know someone that showed me the theory so I was sure he taught it. After talking he basically sold me on the system so I am going to by the forks and the charts and I will play with it for myself. I will have them by the time I go to Heavenly Mountain. If you are there when I am I can show you how it works. I am very excited to play with the whole thing and I already have a bunch of thing that I plan trying once I have the actual forks and the charts that show how everything correlates. Anyway I will let you know how it all works once I get hardware. Until then take care.

Cosmos is created by sound…so who is not at least a micro- musician?
michaelFebruary 20, 2009 at 8:18 pm #30584shenchiParticipantWOW! Thanks Michael for sharing. Is there a dvd, cd, or book that gets into the tones of the 8 directions. I am really getting into the idea of the enrgy of sound. I have always known that sound was in fact energy but I have never really grasped the full implications of that concept. I am just starting to fully apprectiate the depth of the idea that sound is creation. I mean just look at M theory; the two membranes slapping together created the whole of the Universe. That slapping, and all that came from it, was created by sound. The famous Zen Koan ” what is the sound of one hand clapping?”, should go: “what is the sound of two membranes slapping?”
I will definitely be working to hone my listening skills, as I can feel the diferent directions but I don’t think I have gotten into listening to them. I want to get to that level. I will just have to practice until my ears get as subtle as my eyes. Thanks again,
Shenchi
