I wouldn’t be too serious about this, but renunciation, as I understand it, is in the same direction to which C. Castaneda referred when he spoke about “stopping the world.” I don’t like to try to deal with it with much detail with my broken English.
What ever happened to that lineage (or was it a cult?), one can learn something from that direction.
Both alcohol and tobacco are legal intoxicants, but snuff and snus (good Swedish brand) one can only legally buy from Sweden. I am not principally interested about stimulants, but personally I make sometimes exceptions.
Now I would point not to Daoist examples, but towards Buddhist ones.
One could for example check hagiographies of both Padmasambhava and Viruupaa (special link to Hevajra Tantra), both mahasiddhas.
It’s complicated and it might be worth to try to take more detailed look at these examples, but also maybe not.
