There seems to be controversy why they call a Fire/Pig year the Golden Pig, lots of explanations.
From an Alchemy view, the Stem is Fire and the Branch is Pig, which is really Water, so this is Fire in Water or the Dragon in Yin. Its vitality or the Gate of Vitality inside Jing, this fire cooks the Jing creating Gold or something precious, it produces Yuan Qi or the unfolding of our consciousness. So this can be a special year for cooking or steaming and refining ourselves, a great year for transformation.

I think the marketers have simply made a mistake – that the golden pig year would be a year in which the Metal/Gold element would be dominant. For that we have to wait 24 years. I wonder whether it just the new found wealth and power in China before the 2008 Olympics have driven the need for a Golden Year.

Chinese Astrology has gone through a growth process, below is a brief intro to an important stage in its development. There are two major and most popular systems, one is Four Pillars of Destiny/Zi Ping and the other is Purple Star Fate Calculation/Zi Wei Dou Shu. When Zi Ping (see below) changed the way chinese astrology was practices the system used special ways to compare stems and branches, the soul of astrology is the Ten Gods/ Ten Deities / Ten Heavenly Influences or we can say the 10-Jing Types, these set the manin ways people live there lives and the main aspects of their life.
This method compares the five phase relationships bewteen the Animals/branches and Stems. For 2007, the Pig is water and water controls fire, in this method Fire is Money or Wealth to water. So the interaction between the year energies is about the controlling element, which represents money of Gold.
In a birth chart, we look at how the stems and branches influence the Day Stem or Self (Day Master or Day Mistress I suppose).
For a year some consider the branch stronger and its element is the center to compare the stem too. So from this view its easy to see how it is the Golden Pig Year. There are many ways to view all these relastionships.

There are many systems Chinese Astrology, the most popular is Four Pillars of Destiny. Four Pillars was popularized in the Tang Dynasty, 581-907 AD by Li Xu Zhong which used the Year of Birth Chinese Zodiac Animal as the centerpiece. In the Song Dynasty, 960-1127, Xu Zi Ping radically changed the applications of the Four Pillars. One major change was a shift from the year branch to the day stem representing the centerpiece of a person, this method is practiced today and is referred as Ba Zi, Zi Ping or Four Pillars of Destiny, it is a highly accurate divination system for predicting fortune, luck, personality, health, romance, marriage, wealth and family relations.
