He explains how the apparently irrational surge in Trump’s popularity is actually quite rational when viewed from the perspective of the social contract model between the political-economic elite and those they rule (the middle class and below).

I agree with the analysis, but disagree with the conclusion.
The best choice currently is Bernie Sanders, not Trump.
Lower taxes on the rich and more trickle-down economics will just exacerbate the situation that we’ve had for decades, causing more transfer of wealth out of the hands of the middle class and into the billionaire class.
Capitalism and its consumer-based system thrive when the middle class has a lot of money to spend, consume, and stimulate the economy. They are the drivers of the economy, not the billionaires.
