You can only help people who are really troubled by life. Those individuals struggle in their life to collect themselves. Teaching something very exoteric will always be very popular, but it hardly brings people to the Way.
I always put people back to a normal worldly life to cure them, to help them. It is very hard work. You need to assist them, because they don’t like life in the world. They want deliverance and salvation away from the world. They don’t like to be cured by being restored to their normal track of life. Year after year I just guide people back to their good life. Some questions :
If you open the door and push them away, or if you close the door and push them away, what is the difference ?
If a person is refusing reluctant and resisting his “ordinary american life” doesn’t this indicate the Tao wants to grow ? Isn’t the Tao always growing ? Isn’t non-interference a Taoist aim ?
Isn’t the whole problem that most spiritual teachers have little or no attainment and being unable to actually help anyone they fall into a number of habitual responses as part of the theatre of being a super-master : (a) yes keep practicing something will happen someday, I presume (b) you are not ready (c) don’t be so haughty even “I” have not attained anything yet (d) obviously it takes many lifetimes to get anywhere and don’t expect.
Such teachers actually fulfil the Tao in a negative way by creating barriers to growth, and only the really deserving will ditch such teachers and find somebody who can help them.
Is the past really so great ? Look at the state of mankind. The old ways are worth something, but only because of the total poverty of human society.
Is Taoism really the Tao, or is it just a tradition of an ape-species that may or may not at one time have approximated some aspect of the universal reality ?
Is “normal american life” really normal at all ?
For that matter is any human life really normal ?
Or is it terrible suffering that really we should be encouraging to move on change evolve create … anything to change it, because in the USA the world leader there is child slavery / prostitution / pornography amongst the many disgraceful things, and frankly we need any brave soul to bring any light here.
Isn’t that really our situation ?And individually will we lie on the bed coughing up blood at the end of our life in an enlightened immortal state knowing fully that we are already beyond, or will we just be clutching ideas and stories some nice old man told us and a few photos of those good times?
The Tao is vast, powerful, unending, unswerving, and beyond human.

One shouldn’t expect perfection from conditions which are particularly meant to be imperfect.
Also I don’t think most of quite well known religions are seriously speaking about ultimate reality.
So one shouldn’t look for some kind of safety heaven, but try to develop control in/at different desirable levels.

Well yah I agree. I am doing maybe 10 hours of work on my self every day these days. From many traditions, one after the other like a stack. It’s all I do.
But … we have to have the endgame in mind. After all Buddha did lots of practices and it was only when he sat in a fragrant garden and remembered his childhood that he arrived. He thought to himself “nobody will understand”. Why not ? Because all people understand is “earning it”.
There is a path, and perhaps it is arduous. Seems that way sometimes.
But in the end we open to the Universal Consciousness and it washes the house clean. asap because the practices are only to hold off all the darkness until the Light is made.
We have to choose it, choose to surrender what we have been. Are we ready to be someone else ? After all it’s pretty exciting getting power ups and stacks of books and becoming an expert.
What would we be if we surrendered.
A nobody, nothing, unimportant.
Laozi says “a sage is useless”, like a useless tree, good for nothing.
Non-action, but full of the vitality of existence. Singing the song of existence.
Does not come easily to one who wants to earn it. Earning it, in the end is a sickness.

it is useful to use the I Ching when on the Taoist track, for ongoing adjustments. I have the Hua-ching Ni one as well as the Karcher and Wilhelm. The Hua-ching Ni one is called “The book of changes and the unchanging truth”. It has shown me the mindset of a practicing Taoist deep in the tradition. He is quite open and direct. While it might be a bit odd in parts (like the specific guidance section following the discussion of hexagram lines) overall it is a great companion in dealing with cultivation. Alchemical Taoism practice is not a head trip and this book is not. Karcher is okay, I have used it for 12 years or so. MW has recommended other versions of the I Ching on this forum. The deep insight required to penetrate events and circumstances is the job of oracles.
